Mrs Thatcher once said 'there was no such thing as society or community', and she dedicated her years in power to destroying many working class communities, through privatisation and closure of industries, and the depletion of council public housing stock by promoting private property ownership.

In Thatchers tiny insulated world of isolated inward looking, nuclear family units, living in detached or semi detached private properties, whose only opportunity for socialising is through the workplace, and only allegiance is to their isolated families, and making money. Hence the abundance of programmes on tv promoting buying houses, selling us the capitalist dream. read full story / add a comment

Serving soldiers join mass demonstrations

Anti-war activists dubbed this a "peace surge" against Bush's escalation of the war. The largest of the demonstrations was in Washington, D.C., where "a raucous and colorful multitude of protesters…danced, sang, chanted and shouted their opposition" in front of the Capitol (‘Washington Post’, 1/28/07). While most estimates put the crowd in D.C. at 100-150,000, organizers for United for Peace and Justice claimed up to 500,000 attended. read full story / add a comment

Following two more successful meetings last week in Killarney and Manor Hamilton, two further meetings are planned. The First takes place in the Bridge Hotel, Tullamore on Wednesday 7th February at 8.00pm. The second meeting is organised for Letterkenny, Co Donegal on Mon 25th February at the Mount Errigal hotel at 8.00pm. The VLPS meetings allow people who have, or have had, problems with lawyers to meet up and share experiences and hear from others who are taking charge of their affairs themselves and taking the system on as lay litigants. People attending will get information on how to stand up to solicitors and will draw courage from John Gill who is shaking the "powers that be" out of their complacency or worse. All interested parties are welcome at VLPS meetings. read full story / add a comment

According to Yahoo News, the first Irish Viking Ship has been found in the Boyne river. This is surely a very important and exciting find.

However given the track record of this government at destroying our heritage, in places like Carrick Mines, Tara, and many others, it would be entirely inconsistent of them to preserve this. Surely it should be sold off to the highest bidder at a minimum or broken up and incorporated somehow into chic-furnishings on a set of apartments overlooking the site. read full story / add a comment

Banner Display at Patrick’s Bridge, Cork, 5pm-7pm, Thursday 1st February 2007

The Cork branch of Shell to Sea will be doing a banner display at Patrick’s Bridge on the evening of Thursday 1st February. This should be a colourful display of many campaign banners and should provide considerable visual impact.

On this day, Shell will be both announcing its annual financial results and celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding. For the communities of Erris in Co. Mayo this will be no cause for celebration as they continue to resist the unsafe and unwanted Corrib Gas project, as they have done for the last seven years. read full story / add a comment
