Socialist Party Press Release -Presidential Election Question is not whether there should be an Election; It's whether there should be a Presidency By Joe Higgins TD The fact that the bigger Parties in Dáil Éireann are not to put forward candidates for a Presidential Election expresses just how important this office is. The question now is not whether there should be an Election; it's whether there should be a Presidency. Quite clearly, the Presidency is a superfluous office and should be abolished. Talk about the President being able to reach out to the marginalised etc., should be exposed for the cant it is. What groups marginalised by capitalist society need is not symbolic gestures but real changes in policies that affect them and real investment of resources in areas of need. For further information, contact Joe Higgins T.D. at (01) 6183038 Email: [email protected] read full story / add a comment

Yesterday President Bush (the 2nd) of the USA addressed the United Nations general assembly appealing for support in Iraq, insisting the invasion was legitimate and ruling out a military withdrawl - "we must win". Shortly afterwards President Zapatero of Spain addressed the same general assembly of the UN appealing for a high level "alliance of civilisations" to stem the spread of terrorism and commit to the full development of true democratic values. read full story / add a comment
