The Federal Minister of Employment and Workplace Relations (big) Joe Hockey was forced this week to draw his leader’s attention to the oppressive reality facing average working Australians. Crushing debt, loss of penalty rates and other entitlements have forced many Australian families to the wall. Mortgagee sales in working class areas throughout the nation have increased at an alarming rate. John Howard, the darling of big business and the Corporate sector wondered why the common people were not eating cake! read full story / add a comment

The May and June AGM period of Shell Annual meetings in London and Amsterdam should be the specific annual period where the focus should be on giving the Irsh public factual and visual information on the record of Shell worldwide as it struggles to find its feet in Irish waters. This should be the goal in every activity during this period so that people come to know once again why there is opposition to Shell in Mayo, and Ireland is in union with other Shell- suffering comminities who will be making their voices heard at this time. At the very least lots of placard information and messages. read full story / add a comment

international / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Saturday May 05, 2007 19:16 by Dorothy Gale
Green Party candidate for Dublin Central Patricia McKenna said that
Ireland had an opportunity to play a leadership role in the fight against
the continuing scandal of hunger in the world. She said it was a disgrace
that the world's poorest had to wait until 2015 for the Irish government
to meet its UN commitment on overseas aid.

McKenna said: "Ireland's history of famine in the 19th century, coupled
with our more recent experiences of poverty and emigration, give us
legitimacy in providing leadership on foreign aid. But Fianna Fail and the
PDs have proven themselves unable to provide that leadership. The last two
governments have shamefully reneged on their aid commitments."

McKenna was commenting as the government announced today that it will
recognise and fund a commemoration of Ireland's Great Famine.

Anti-nuclear activists have been demonstrating outside and inside the annual meeting of stockholders of one of Germany’s electricity giants, the transnational EON.
A coalition of environmental groups protested in Essen against EON’s plans to expand nuclear power production.
Some of the countries where EON is planning new nukes are Finland, Great Britain, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria.
In Russia the infamous trinational Urenco uranium enrichment company, partly owned by EON, has dumped some 80,000 tonnes of depleted Urenco uranium as waste. read full story / add a comment

Australian scientists Geoff Jones & Glenn Almany, both of the University of James Cook in Queensland have published the results of their long awaited "Nemo Fish" study.

They irradiated more than 300 female fish in the waters surrounding Papua New Guinnea in the South Pacific so as to track them and test the Walt Disney "in search of Nemo" theory that fish always return home (if not on your dishie - they're at home - irradiated - extinct or cutely searching their moma's and papa's).

At least 60% of the tracked fish returned home. It's not a land slide majority but is certainly indicative of a fair chunk of the fish in question sharing something important in common :- "their idea of home". Thankfully for 3rd world fisherpeople fish have remarkably short memories and so any of the more suspicious fish will soon forget how much studying went into their habits & movements.

The Government has decided to commemorate the Famine!

With what?

A State Reception in Iveagh House!

How appropriate for this Government to mark the anniversary of the Great Irish Famine by a Reception in Iveagh House. Let them eat, drink and be merry for today we let others die.

Would it not be more suitable to mark the Famine by a grant of aid to other famine-stricken lands? This Government has never been able to reach the Foreign Aid targets it set itself. read full story / add a comment

We need TV naturally to embrace news and what is happening around us. We also need radio but Liveline this week was a complete sham. Joe with the ego (Bottler)and Williams (the great man of fiction on Irish Gangland). We all know what happened when a prisoner phoned from a cell in Portlaoise. I personally believe RTE have broken the law on this occasion. How can we have a prisoner in Portlaoise taking the airways and making threats.
