For over 20 years Dublin’s working class communities have been ravished by heroin. Each time the heroin crisis became an epidemic the local communities organised themselves to fight back. At last, a book has been written by somebody who was in the middle of this fightback. This book, “Pushers Out”, gives the affected communities side of the story. It pulls no punches and records the highs and the lows of the 20 year campaign. The Coalition of Communities Against Drugs are launching “Pushers Out” in St. Catherine’s Community Centre in the South Inner City on 30th June at 7:00pm read full story / add a comment

Today South African miners walked through cities in their thousands to call for an end to poverty and improved working conditions and health care and other sundry benefits and rights. Though african, and reported in BBC, RTE etc., their action won't get squeezed into the telly reports this evening. Yesterday a few thousand assembled in Madrid to say "end poverty" europeans "on message" they got their publicity telly time. Last week Glastonbury saw Mr Geldof say "end poverty" though it must be said, by supporting the Tony Blair & Gordon Brown geopolitical agenda. The man has been twice sainted. Meanwhile the British as part of their "remake the image of 3rd world poverty" are considering taking S. Africa off the G8 invite list, "coz the africans aren't hard enough on Zimbabwe" read full story / add a comment

We live in an imperfect and complex world but while there is still a serious issue with global poverty, let us acknowledge, that there have been significant advances in poverty reduction, in particular in Asia, in the past quarter century. The proposed reform of the EU sugar market last week is an illustration of the complexity in arriving at solutions that can reconcile conflicting interests among developing countries and the interests of workers in rich countries. read full story / add a comment

The Tribunal will consist of three days of hearings investigating various issues related to the war on Iraq, such as the legality of the war, the role of the United Nations, war crimes and the role of the media, as well as the destruction of the cultural sites and the environment. The session in Istanbul is the culminating session of commissions of inquiry and hearings held around the world over the past two years. Former Kenyan strongman President Daniel arap Moi's security services were notorious for torture in the latter years of his 24-year-old rule that ended in 2002. As Chair and Secretary of the recently founded West Cork Parents Action Group they are encouraged by the interest they have had from parents since starting the group a few months ago. You might be forgiven for thinking that the election of two women presidents had firmly established respect for the contribution that women can make to Irish public life. A review of the media coverage of Kathy Sinnott makes you realise, sadly, that we have some way to go. You’re left wondering exactly whose interests some newspapers exist to serve because it is unlikely to be the large – if silent – majority of offended readers who are actually very grateful for Kathy Sinnott’s efforts on their behalf. SLIGO MAYOR alderman Declan Bree paid tribute to Leitrim socialist Jim Gralton, during a recent visit to New York. Speaking at the Leitrimman's grave in Woodlawn cemetary in the Bronx, Bree said that Gralton personified all that was positive about the Irish and American labour movements. Sinn Fein/IRA have admitted that it shot dead a teenage schoolgirl in Derry 32 years ago and blamed it on the British Army. The admission puts to an end one of the most notorious pieces of Republican propaganda promoted over the past three decades - the the "Brits" murdered a "wee girl" on her way to the shops to buy milk for her mammy.
