At the European Social Forum in Florence in November 2002 a debate emerged within the alter-globalisation movement over whether building opposition to Bush’s global war was a diversion from opposing corporate globalisation. The debate - in terms of developing a strategy for the movement - is centred on identifying the key issue or challenge that the movement should focus on. This is an essential task if the movements are to win and not just oppose or resist. read full story / add a comment

Today (Monday) saw many Nigerians called in by the immigration police. It appears that they will be deported tonight. Residents Against Racism have called a protest for 1pm on Wednesday March 16th at the Garda National Immigration Bureau on Burgh Quay. (Burgh Quay is the street between Tara Street DART station and O'Connell bridge on the south side of the river) +++++ from a report by someone who was in the GNIB offices today.. "Among those to be deported is a 19 year old who has been here for 5 years and is to sit his Leaving Cert in June. He has no family alive. His solicitor was with him so we were a bit optimistic but as we were leaving the guy was lifted and taken home to pack his luggage for deportation." read full story / add a comment

Why it is hard to share the wealth The rich are getting richer while the poor remain poor. If you doubt it, ponder these numbers from the US, a country widely considered meritocratic, where talent and hard work are thought to be enough to propel anyone through the ranks of the rich. In 1979, the top 1% of the US population earned, on average, 33.1 times as much as the lowest 20%. In 2000, this multiplier had grown to 88.5. If inequality is growing in the US, what does this mean for other countries? read full story / add a comment

Kofi Annan recently announced the UN is attempting to define “terrorism” in a universal sense; he hopes that a ‘new’ definition would apply both to States and groups. In view of the flagrant disregard for international law and convention by the US, one wonders whether this is a flight of fancy or a feeble attempt to regain some relevance for the UN. This new definition largely hinges on ‘civilian’ attacks. Analysts would view this as a purely ideological manoeuvre. The definition of “civilian” is no longer clear. read full story / add a comment
waterford / environment / event notice Saturday March 12, 2005 10:13 by Israel Finnerty 1 comment (last - tuesday march 22, 2005 23:58)
In Tramore, Co. Waterford there is a nice three mile long beach with sand dunes. This beach leads into a back strand with a lagoon like lake which is also a bird sanctuary. In the middle of this, on the back of the beach there is a dump. This public landfill lets people leave their rubbish so that it can blown onto the beach and washed out to sea at high tide. Not only does it destroy an area of natural beauty and a wildlife sanctuary but it also devastates a tourist resorts biggest asset, the beach. I plan to raise public awareness of this environmental catastrophe. The first stage of this plan will involve a Demonstration March through Tramore town and on to the dump. This will take place on Saturday March 26th @ 3pm. If you are interested in supporting this project or would like more details email me on [email protected] Thank You, Israel Finnerty read full story / add a comment |
