This a statement and an appeal for solidarity from a group of Iranian workers based at the Iran Khodro car plant. Full statement at the link. Friends and Fellow workers, International workers day is the day of international solidarity with workers. This is the day of protest against capitalism, against injustice in the world. Years ago Chicago workers started a struggle in support of their demands and many workers lost their lives. Workers are still fighting for their rights and thousands of workers have continued the struggle for the demands of May day. The Iranian government was forced to accept workers day only after years of worker protests. Iranian workers, cannot gather free of police presence to mark May day. For years everytime we tried to organise an independent march, the government intervened and it arrested many workers as in Saghez in 2004. Mahmud Salehi, one of the workers accused of organising the Saghez events is in prison , many other workers await similar sentences. read full story / add a comment

The 26-County Justice Bill, which was signed into law on May 9 marks yet a further erosion of civil rights in the 26-County state. Already the 26-County Administration has at its disposal a raft of some of the most draconian legislation in Western Europe, including the infamous Offences Against the State Act, as well as a non-jury Special Criminal Court. read full story / add a comment

The ceremonial opening of the power-sharing Executive at Stormont, with Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness sitting alongside Ian Paisley of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), is portrayed as a fairy tale ending to the Northern Ireland peace process. In fact, it is more akin to a business agreement between two hostile parties charged with opening up Northern Ireland PLC to global investors. read full story / add a comment

They will meet with Willie this Thursday 10th May at 12.00 outside St Nicholas’s Church and all are welcome to attend. The Goldman prize is internationally renowned. It is the equivalent of a Nobel Prize for the environment. Willie was awarded the €93,000 prize in a ceremony in San Francisco two weeks ago. During his US trip he had the opportunity to put his case to leading US political figures. It was awarded in recognition of the Shell to Sea Campaign, which opposes the controversial ‘Corrib Gas’ project in Erris Co. Mayo. read full story / add a comment |
