The Republican Socialist Youth Movement was officially formed in County Wicklow on 1 October 2005 by socialist and republican youth from throughout Ireland. The RSYM declares its intention to work towards National Liberation and Socialist Revolution. Father Alex Ried (one of the two Clergymen who wittnessed the recent IRA decomissioning) angered Unuionists during a heated public debate in south Belfast when he drew parallells between the Unuionist treatment of nationalists and the treatment of The Jews by Nazis during the second World War. Fr Ried made the comments when his integrity as a wittness was questioned by certin members of the audience. He stated: : "The reality is that the nationalist community in Northern Ireland were treated almost like animals by the unionist community. They were not treated like human beings. At a public meeting in Co Cork, a parent in the audience inadvertently used the expression ‘his SNA’ in referring to her son’s Special Needs Assistant while asking a question of one of the speakers. It was an incidental thing in terms of the woman's question but it was interpreted as its central point by the CEO of the National Council for Special Education, Mr Pat Curtain, who was there to tell about all the progress being made by the NCSE in implementing the Education of Persons with Special Needs Act 2004. read full story / add a comment

The Industrial Relations debate in Australia is noted by the lack of involvement of those most affected – the entire working population of the nation! We witness various politicians, churchmen, union officials arguing the issues but we do not witness a mobilisation of the workforce ending the argument one way or the other. Trocaire and NUI Maynooth Amnesty and Global Awareness Societies present an evening talk on Gender, Conflict and Development with Charm Tong. Charm Tong is a member of the Shan ethnic community in Burma, who was forced into exile in Thailand. She is a frontline activist and advocate for human rights, who helped to found the Shan Women's Action Network (SWAN) and a school for Shan youth. Charm has brought international attention to the human rights abuses experienced by the Shan at the hands of the Burmese military. At just 23 years old, Charm was the recipient of the 2005 Reebok Human Rights Award. Some 45 police and medical staff are going on trial today accused of mistreating protesters that had been arrested and held at a camp near Genoa. this is the "Bolzaneto torture trial". On Friday, 28 officers will appear in court over a raid at a school which protesters were using as a dormitory. this is the follow up to the beginning of the court proceedings on April 6th 2005 which saw police first testify on May 4th http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=69680 These cases focus more on the Diaz school incidents than Guiliani, but the whole thing comes together and indeed all these investigations and trials are concurrent now which heightens their contemporary political effect.
