Gay Wedding For Philippine Communist Rebels

Two communist rebel fighters in the Philippines have tied the knot in a ceremony at a jungle base.

The pair are members of the New People's Army, rebels who have been fighting for independence in rural areas since the late 1960s.

The NPA added same-sex relationships and marriage to its independence manifesto policy in 1998. But, the Philippine government which has been waging war against the communists does not recognize gay relationships and in much of the country homosexuality remains a taboo. read full story / add a comment

Good summary of story of threat to Tara/Skryne Valley from pagan writer

The question becomes, What is Tara Where are the boundaries of the ancient site says Gavin Bone, prominent Pagan author and resident of Kells, on the M3 route. The Roads Authority has defined the sacred precinct of Tara as the small area currently fenced off. But in truth the site is much larger: it sprawls across several hilltops, and includes the whole Skryne Valley.

Tuesday 15 February is the 2nd anniversary of the enormous anti-war marches in Dublin and elsewhere. To mark the occasion, the Galway Alliance Against War is holding a benefit gig in the Roisin Dubh, Dominick-street. Proceeds will go towards the legal defence of five anti-war activists (Pitstop Ploughshares), who face a judge and jury in early March. Performers confirmed so far include Carmel Dempsey and her band, Steve Hanks, Tony Small and Rod Goodall. The gig will start at 8.30 - tickets are 8 euros (5 for non-waged). We would urge you to support this event - both as an act of solidarity and as a means of renewing contact with the anti-war movement. It promises to be an enjoyable night read full story / add a comment

Hani Lazim Speaking toor
(Dublin 7.30pm, ATGWU Hall, 55 Middle Abbey St)

Hani Lazim came to Britain in the '60s, having won a scholarship to study overseas from Iraq's oil ministry. His family were poor and had a background of involvement in radical politics. He returned to Iraq to visit them in 1968 and found himself in the middle of the Baathist coup. Several members of his family were arrested but he eventually managed to get out and return to Britain. Since then He has been politically active. With other exiles he organised against Saddam. Then they organised against the first Gulf war led by Bush's father. They also organised against the sanctions, against the war and now They organise against the occupation.

11.30am on Monday at the Great Southern Hotel, Cork Airport sees the start of the oral hearing where objectors get to air their views on the Environmental Protection Agency's granting of a licence for 2 Incinerators at Ringaskiddy in Cork Harbour. The general feeling among objectors is that the decision has already been made and this hearing is about going through the motions to give the illusion of democracy and consultation. Please come to the hotel to show support for the campaigners and to inject some true democracy into the proceedings This is a PUBLIC hearing so anyone can attend. It must be said that in our efforts to highlight the ongoing crisis one thing is constant –
The respect and gratitude the patients have for the nurses and doctors in A&E across the country who have continued to work for years in unhealthy and unsafe conditions and as they so rightly say enough is enough for patients and staff. It must stop now.

Patients together met with Minister Harney in November at that meeting she promised she would meet with us again in a few weeks. In light of the continued deterioration of conditions for staff and patients in A&E we now seek that meeting. We also wish to discuss any actions taken to implement our demands read full story / add a comment
