Following on from the affiliation by the PCS, the ASLEF union has now voted to affiliate to Hands Off the People of Iran. Nobody spoke against the motion to affiliate. Full article at link. The national conference of Aslef, the rail drivers’ union, has voted unanimously to affiliate to the Hands Off the People of Iran campaign. This is the second major union to do so, following the decision of last month’s PCS conference, where only Socialist Workers Party comrades opposed affiliation. However, the SWP had no presence at the Aslef conference and nobody spoke against the proposal. Delegates from across the country spoke in favour, including general secretary Keith Norman. read full story / add a comment

Derangement, paranoia and liberal racism are now centrist political positions. The distance from Limerick to Shannon is about 15 miles. On Sunday next 8 June a protest walk will take place from the Treaty Stone near Thomond Bridge in Limerick to Shannon airport, beginning at 1 pm. We expect to arrive at Shannon at about 5 pm. read full story / add a comment

On May 21st special forces of the Austrian police forced entry to 23 homes of animal right activists across Austria. 14 persons were charged with suspected forming of a criminal organisation (§278a of the Austrian penal code) in connection with direct animal right actions. Ten persons were arrested and are in prison as suspects. At first nine were sent to the Vienna Neustadt prison and one to Innsbruck who has been brought to Vienna Neustadt on 28.05. Five prisoners are in hungerstrike at the moment, at least one since the 21.05. (date today: 29.05.). A new repersentive group is being formed to speak for the majority of Electrical Contractors in Ireland who have no voice when it comes to talks about pay and conditions. This group is to be called The NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS OF IRELAND (NECI). A meeting is being held in the Radisson Hotel Athlone on Saturday the 7th of June and all interested Electrical Contractors are invited to attend. In the article below Yassamine Mather casts a jaundiced eye on the political economy of the theocracys Iran. Full text of the article at the link. Before Ruhollah Khomeini came to power, he portrayed himself and the proposed islamic regime as defenders of the poor: “This system of clerical rule is necessary to prevent injustice, corruption, oppression by the powerful over the poor and weak, and deviation from islam and sharia law; and also to destroy anti-islamic influence and conspiracies by non-muslim foreign powers.” Once in power and in a position to deal with Iran’s economy, Khomeini’s infamous response to demands for a better life spoke volumes about his real position: “People did not make revolution for bread. They made revolution for islam ... economy is for the donkeys” .He later expressed impatience with those who complained that the standard of living had dropped after the revolution: “I cannot believe that the purpose of all these sacrifices was to have less expensive food.” read full story / add a comment |
