After decades of deforestation of tropical rainforest in the amazon basin the ecuadorian state and oil companies are trying to enter oil fields in the last pristine forests, some of them even under state “protection”. All held in the name of economic growth and progress, oil exploitation leads to, as uncountable events in the recent past have shown, destruction and contamination of vast areas and cultural destruction of people who’s life depend on the forest. read full story / add a comment

Dear Activists

A special all Dublin activist meeting is taking place on Saturday 6th December in the Central Hotel. Activists from the four local authority areas will be attending - Fingal, South County Dublin, Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown and Dublin City.

The four local authorities have reacted differently to the new power to implement non collection, and the campaigns have responded accordingly. Reports will be given from each campaign area. A general discussion on tactics and the way to progress the campaigns will then take place.

A good turn out is hoped for. Hopefully you can attend and bring other activists along. read full story / add a comment

300 students are tonight occupying the main library in UCD. This is against the cutbacks which have been implemented in the library budget. Opening hours have been slashed, staffing levels have been cut and the materials avialble to students are in decline. UCD students Union are demanding that the college allocates the correct resources to the library and that the government reverses its programme of cuts.

The Students have vowed to continue the protest until their demands are reached. Tonights occupation is the 3rd time in three weeks that UCD students have occupied the main library. We reckon that around 600 students have taken part so far, if you include the numbers who attended the sit in in the Earlsfort Terrace library. Students in other colleges and ITs should consider similar actions to step up the campain against cutbacks. Pictures to follow! read full story / add a comment

The Irish Anti-War Movement is holding a demonstration this Saturday, December 6th, at which protesters will 'blockade' Shannon Airport, the civilian airport in the west of Ireland where approximately half the US troops en route to Iraq and Afghanistan have stopped to rest and refuel. (See www.irishantiwar.org) The following opinion piece was commissioned by The Irish Times for use this week, then rejected by an editor who said his initial "hasty acceptance" had failed to recognise that the paper should not be "associated with and assist in mobilising for a call to break the law a step too far!" read full story / add a comment
