The WHO once aimed to help nations stand on their own two feet, but now it mainly pushes the agendas of the rich and powerful, says Dr David Bell. That's why it cares more about experimental vaccines than basic sanitation.

Is Rishi Sunak English? Prof Eric Kaufmann says yes, by nationality, but not by ethnicity. It's a subject that typically produces more heat than light, but that's because people don't pin down their terms.

Spc. Casey Sheehan transited through Shannon, thanks to Bush & Bertie, on his way to his death. His brief time here confirmed for Casey his love for Ireland. What a shame and disgrace on us that we were complicit in his death! Today is a time to remember Casey, his family, and especially his mother, Cindy Sheehan, who has raised to US and perhaps global peace movement from, if not the grave, then certainly ennui. She deserves our thanks and our sympathies on this day. read full story / add a comment

The US media operating clearly on behalf of US capitalism has reacted angrily to the protests in France using hatred and fear. This is quite striking because normally the US media hardly covers internal developments in other countries. So the fact it is doing this shows it's true fears which are that the social unrest might spread to the USA itself where social tensions are already very high. read full story / add a comment

A leading member of the British Labour Party and supporter of the war in Iraq addressed the Irish Labour Party conference on Saturday. That is despite the opposition of some members of the Irish organisation.

Peter Watt, General Secretary, the Labour Party spoke on Saturday night at the conference in DCU during the warm up to Pat Rabbitte's speech. How does this tie in with Labour's contribution to the anti war movement in Ireland? see http://www.labour.ie/youth/news/index/20060321162846.html

A number of speakers addressed the conference in support of the motion which was resoundingly passed by the hundreds of delegates present.

Rabbitte signal his intent to take on the unions

"Labour supports social partnership. Change in the workplace and the modernisation of our public services should be negotiated, but no interest group has the right to veto changes which are necessary for the public good. When 130,000 young people can’t get a driving test, Labour will not shrug its shoulders and walk away. The rights of those young people and the imperative of road safety overrides any other consideration"
