Now more than ever, we are one. In the world of global economy and global media, it is possible to consume products from the other side of the planet on a daily basis and to understand something of far away places as our cultural input speeds thousands of miles in a split second to reach us. read full story / add a comment

The latest McDonalds’ ad is telling. A man rushes to the counter and proceeds to push a microphone into the face of some bewildered kid bedecked in a green smock. “So what’s in your burgers?” he asks, in pursuit of the sort of anti-corporate expose that has fuelled Fast Food Nation and Super Size Me. Pressed, the kid blurts “100% Irish Beef.” read full story / add a comment

Aontacht.net is a new Republican website created by a group of young Irish Republicans with the intention of debating the future direction of Irish Republicanism and its relevance to modern society. It was felt that there needed to be a more detailed examination of the problems facing the ideology than has been carried out before but that there was no exisiting forum for this to be done in an impartial manner away from party political lines. The main area of debate will be the discussion forum which will become the nucleus of a much bigger website in time. The moderators have been handpicked for their political experience, knowledge and political diversity. Aontacht.net is an ambitous project to bring agreement from people of divided political backgrounds and to create better understandings of respective positions. Please read the mission statement below and join if you agree with its stated aims. read full story / add a comment

The Guardian carries a quiet little story about how one of the UK soldiers being court martialled over abuse of Iraqi prisoners admits to being "ashamed".

This trial supposedly arose out of the discovery of "disturbing" photographs by a woman working in a photo-processing laboratory.

The soldiers are said to have (besides beating the prisoners) have forced their prisoners to simulate anal and oral sex. read full story / add a comment
