On 19 December 2008, approximately 150 undocumented migrants and solidarity activists occupied the Prediger Church in Zurich (Switzerland) for more than two weeks. A call for Internment
Eoghan Harris worked himself into a ball as he bounced up and down in Seanad Eireann the other night. The reason for this noisy outburst was the killing of two British soldiers and one member of the P.S.N.I. last weekend. Before he actually said the word Internment, he led the listeners up this point by repeatedly referring to Internment as ‘The I word‘. In Ireland, the word Internment evokes painful memories in generations of Irish people North and South of the border. The very mention of the word Internment carries an absolute loathing with it. Certain negative words can have this effect on people because of the fearful emotions associated with it. read full story / add a comment

The recent events in Northern Ireland have brought back a whole host of dark memories. The attacks have placed a question mark over both the stability and success of the peace process. However, in many ways the attacks are very different from those during the Troubles. Unlike the violence in the past, these attacks are not really aimed at gaining public support or making a political point but at destabilising Northern Ireland in its transition from post-conflict zone to stable society. read full story / add a comment

Working class should unite against the killings

The killings by the Real IRA and the Continuity IRA of two soldiers and a policeman should be roundly condemned by every section of the working class movement.

Working class people today face an unprecedented assault on jobs and on wages. Our public services are threatened by cuts and privatisation. More than ever we need to stand united to defend living standards. read full story / add a comment
