The conference ‘Another Europe is Possible’ being organised by Sinn Féin/GUE-NGL on Saturday next, Sept 9 in Liberty Hall will provide a welcome forum for exchange of information and debate on current developments in the EU. But one of the MEPs participating in the ‘Another Europe is Possible’ debate – Kathy Sinnott – shares the clerical-conservative views of Youth Defence and SPUC. The left should be careful not to let itself to be confused with clerical-conservatives. Beware a repeat of the 'No to Nice' campaign. read full story / add a comment

Remembering the desperate on 9/11

Nearly 90 poets from around the world, including Irish poets, Dave Lordan, Nigel McLoughlin, Kevin Higgins & Patrick Chapman, have contributed to Babylon Burning: 9/11 five years on, an anthology of poems on the Twin Towers atrocity and its consequences. But they aim for more than pious hand-wringing: the anthology will be free, but there will be a request to donate to the Red Cross.

It is becoming more evident each day; the real target of new draconian laws and policies is not the (fabricated) terrorist ‘threat’, it is the domestic population – the enemy is you! The initial indicator (for this writer) was Section 543 of the Australian Defence Forces manual, which describes attack strategies against civilians and local populations – it should not be forgotten that Australia is a micro version and imitator of the USA and to a lesser extent the UK. read full story / add a comment

We're all aware of the contempt with which people with disability and their families are regarded by the state. Yesterday, in Jerusalem the appeal of Mordechai Vanunu against the restrictions imposed on him by the State of Israel came before the Supreme Court. After his release from 18 years of imprisonment in April 2004, Vanunu was not truly free..The restrictions imposed by the State, among other things, denied him the right to freedom of speech and freedom of movement. These restrictions are in breach of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Yesterday, 6 September, was another day for Mordechai's appeal in court. read full story / add a comment

John Donovan, a long term shareholder and critic of Royal Dutch Shell Plc management, provides an overview of a board room culture which has allowed a series of scandals to damage Shell’s once proud reputation. A culture where directors have been prepared to cook the books and have whistleblowers (Dr John Huong) and campaigners (the “Rossport Five”), terrorised and thrown in jail. Shell's reputation has been ruined due to the rapacious greed, arrogance and aggressive tactics of some Shell executives.

The management of Royal Dutch Shell has more than met its match in the current no-holds-barred "negotiation" with the Kremlin over potential profits from the $20 billion Sakhalin II project in Russia.
