A remembrance on the 150th anniversary of one of the deadliest anti-immigrant riots in American history, the Bloody Monday Massacre of August 6, 1855 was held in Louisville Kentucky on Saturday, August 6th, 2005. The instigators of the massacre were the Know Nothings, a Nativist political party who were fearful of losing control of the Louisville City Council. They were driven by an anti-immigrant vitriolic press to attack and slaughter as many as 150 German and Irish immigrants who lived in the poorest sections of Louisville. read full story / add a comment

Don't be fooled by the headlines and the fancy graphics. The US is not worried about Iran's nuclear weapons programme. They would have taken more serious steps by now if they were. It's part of the War for Oil series. The main oil countries, or even pipeline countries will be included - Saudi Arabia, Iran and Syria. And there's plenty of spin on the news to prepare public opinion for it. read full story / add a comment

5 members of the Cuban state government, which has stretched since its resplendent days of thrashing hotels and being squeezy hugged by Kruschev, hae had their court rulings annuled. They have been held by the US since 1998 Since March 10, 2004, the three US magistrates assigned by the Atlanta Appeal Court"s 11th Circuit to revise the case of Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labaņino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez.have been doing their thing and their decision today to reverse the convictions was unanimous. In response to the ongoing imprisonment of five Mayo farmers for protesting against Shell's attempts to build a dangerous pipeline the SWP, as a member of the Shelltosea campaign, is organising a picket of the Shell petrol station on the Finglas Rd in Glasnevin, D9. It will take place today (Tuesday 9th August) at 5.30pm and every Tuesday thereafter at the same time. The picket will last about one hour - the 'rush hour'. As Shell attempt to defuse the issue whilst making no changes to their position, the pressure must be kept upon them, so that they cannot control the terms of the argument, and so that we can get five men out of prison who should not be there. All are welcome to join the picket. read full story / add a comment

High Court Asked to Take Guantanamo Case WASHINGTON - Lawyers for a Guantanamo detainee asked the Supreme Court on Monday to consider blocking military tribunals for terror suspects, and overturn what they called an extreme ruling by high court nominee John Roberts. Roberts was on a three-judge federal appeals court panel that last month ruled against Salim Ahmed Hamdan, a Yemeni who once was Osama bin Laden's driver. Hamdan's attorneys said in their filing with the justices that the appeals court had rejected long-standing constitutional and international law.
