From the rebel homes of Kerry, the Ulster hills of Monaghan, and working class Dublin, the 5 Sinn Fein T.D.s pose a challenge to the powers that be. They inherit a 200 yr. old revolutionary tradition that has promoted the needs of the people of no property. They have withstood a vile, vituperative campaign from that most backward political section,-the pathological hacks of Sir Anthony in the Independent. But will they be true to that revolutionary spirit, or, in Leinster House with those who bartered and sold, will they assimilate to the structures of oppression? Already, over in New York, Smurfit's boy, and Gerry Adams' friend, Niall O'Dowd, in the Irish Voice, has attacked Sinn Fein's winning equality platform. Will they be true to those who elected them, the people of no property, or will they succumb to their millionaire U.S. backers, some of whom have the most sinister connections? In a shocking development, it was today revealed that Irish activists have spent more time debating on Indymedia.ie than any other social or political activity. This is believed to have contributed to the utter lack of action directed towards a huge gathering of capitalist leaders in a posh hotel in Dublin (news report attached). When questioned on this, leaders of the SWP/SP/WP/WSM/GR/SA alphabet soup reacted by turning to the person on their right and yelling "Sectarian!!". read full story / add a comment

The two-State solution would enable the Jewish State to arrogate 80%-84% of mandatory Palestine and deny the vast bulk of the estimated 4-5 million Palestinian refugees their inalienable right to return to their hometowns and villages from which they were expelled at gunpoint by Zionist troops and irregulars, or fled in fear, when the Zionist regime was established in 1948. read full story / add a comment

The Guardian has a review of "Encounters: How Racism Came to Ireland", by Bill Rolston and Michael Shannon. The book explores the origins of Irish racism. The review starts about halfway down the page (the 9th paragraph). One of the review's points is that racism has a deep history in Ireland and has not -- contrary to the startled exclamations of contemporary commentators -- suddenly sprung out of nowhere. It's good to see that O'Connell was on the right side, and good to see reminders of the support from "non-white" leaders for the struggle for Irish independence. read full story / add a comment
