2pm to 5pm, Saturday 6th November, 2004. Teachers Club, Dublin 1. Details: ESF Feedback & ISF Future Visions Meeting: Details Below ------------------------------------------------------------ Background: Prior to the Irish Social Forum (ISF) in early October and the European Social Forum (ESF) which was the following weekend, the ISF Working Groups weekly meeting discussed co-hosting a report-back meeting from the ESF in London. We intended to assist in bringing together different sectors and perspectives from the Global Justice Movement (or whatever you want to call it) to have an open discussion about how people got on over in London. The second objective we outlined was to take the opportunity of the gathering to discuss peoples future visions for the ISF and to take action based on these discussions. So if you want to learn more about the ESF and the ISF do come along, and/or if you want to share your views about the ESF and the ISF please come along. Prior to the meeting, it may be helpful for you to read the World Social Forum Charter of Principles under the articles of which the ISF and the ESF takes place:

Six ‘Trident Ploughshares’ anti-war activists from Leicester, London and Norwich, who this June entered Burghfield, one of Britain’s WMD bases, and put it out of action for over an hour -- left Reading Magistrates’ Court this afternoon disappointed that the Magistrate had found four of them guilty of criminal damage (the other two had accepted ‘bindovers’ and so the charges against them were dropped), but pleased that their arguments about why their actions were valid under international law were at least heard sympathetically by the Court. read full story / add a comment

'The Irish poet Brendan Kennelly once described Bewley's Café in Grafton Street as the 'heart and the hearth of Dublin'. Dublin, he said, would not be Dublin without Bewley's. These sentiments have been echoed by generations of Irish people since Joshua Bewley first introduced tea to the Irish public in 1835. Bewley's is a name synonymous in the history of Dublin and more recently of Ireland as a whole. Bewley's itself has a rich history of growth and survival which has proved it to be one of the last bastions of tradition in a changing Ireland.' read full story / add a comment

The jury in Mary Kelly's trial have just returned after three hours with a "guilty" verdict, ten to two. Sentencing will be tomorrow. The judge had directed the jury to ignore anything Mary had tried to say about the US military and Iraq. To further ensure a conviction he told them that a threat would need to be "immediate" for someone to have a lawful excuse to damage property. read full story / add a comment

On Wednesday the 3rd of November there will be a ceremony in University College Dublin to celebrate the college’s 150th anniversary. Students calling themselves “Global Action” are determined to use the occasion to raise serious questions about the current state of higher education. Three days of teach-ins are planned which will discuss a wide range of topics from the threat of privatisation, inequality of access and democracy in education. The events will culminate in what has been billed as a ‘Reclaim the Campus’ party. The event is timed to clash with the celebrations of the college authorities and is modelled on the ‘Reclaim the Streets’ carnivals that have been popularised world wide by the anti-globalisation movement. read full story / add a comment

The consequences of the theoretical division between Bakunin and Marx have been huge. Historically we have seen, not a unified labour movement, but in fact three main components of the movement – Labourism, as well as Marxism/socialism and anarcho-syndicalism. There have been sporadic attempts to link the two main components: • Joseph Dietzgen’s turn to assist the victims of the Haymarket "bomb. • Daniel Guerin’s anarchist publications. • The German council communists’. • The Friends of Durruti Group’s. But these are a few exceptions, and the barriers of division are continually being erected with scares, smears and misinformation. If we are to even think of winning the common struggle, some unity will have to be reached and the truth about past events, beyond Marx and Bakunin, both clarified and placed firmly in the history books. read full story / add a comment |
