The Department of Education recorded an underspend of £69 million last year. This at a time when they are insisting that spending on children’s education should be slashed.

The £69million underspend should have been used to provide education services for children. £69million is sufficient to resolve every funding issue in the two hardest hit areas, the South Eastern Education and Library Board (Co Down) and the Belfast Education and Library Board (Belfast City). If that money was released there would be no excuse for special needs cuts, cuts in teacher numbers, school transport cuts, staff shortages, freeze on Classroom Assistants job evaluation, library cuts, etc.

The education trade unions are demanding that the Department immediately release this cash.

Sy Hersh (widely speculated to have lots of good CIA informants) writes in the New Yorker that the Bush administration needed the Israelis to invade Lebanon so that Hezbollah's long-range missiles could be removed (so that when the USA attacks Iran there won't be any possibility for retaliatory strikes
Israeli intelligence estimated at the outset of the air war that Hezbollah had roughly five hundred medium-range Fajr-3 and Fajr-5 rockets and a few dozen long-range Zelzal rockets; the Zelzals, with a range of about two hundred kilometres, could reach Tel Aviv. (One rocket hit Haifa the day after the kidnappings.) It also has more than twelve thousand shorter-range rockets. Since the conflict began, more than three thousand of these have been fired at Israel.
[...]
“The Israelis told us it would be a cheap war with many benefits,” a U.S. government consultant with close ties to Israel said. “Why oppose it? We’ll be able to hunt down and bomb missiles, tunnels, and bunkers from the air. It would be a demo for Iran.” read full story / add a comment

REPUBLICAN PRISONERS ACTION GROUP

The organizers of the Hunger Strike Commemoration at Casement Park on Sunday August 14th snubbed the prisoners currently in Maghaberry Gaol and their families.

RPAG had approached the organizing committee earlier this week with a statement setting out the conditions of Republican prisoners in Maghaberry. The organizers confirmed this morning that the statement could be read, but refused to let the mother of the prisoner read it herself. Despite the promises when it came to the event this afternoon no statement was read out.

RPAG is therefore asking the media to publish the statement.

Geraldine Taylor of Republican Sinn Fein said:

“The prisoners and the families are outraged at how they have been treated. The families have shown solidarity with the families of the Hunger Strikers and believe that they have much in common. However the sacrifice of today’s prisoners’ and their families has been virtually ignored by those organizing this event.”

Consider the war in Lebanon a test scenario, a ‘dry run’ to test the international response to flagrant criminal actions. Now recall Russia’s failure to support Yugoslavia in the Balkans. Russia stalled and now Yugoslavia is no more, just a number of fragmented pseudo States overseen by NATO and the largest U.S. base of occupation in Europe, camp Bondsteel. It is well known today that the USA wouldn’t have dared if Russia had supported its traditional ally, but a drunken fool, Boris Yeltsin, was in command at the time, the rest is history. read full story / add a comment

Members of the Association of Hunt Saboteurs placed a peaceful picket on the Louth Foxhounds hunt ball held at the Four Season’s Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin on Saturday night last.

Over thirty members and supporters of the AOHS staged a two- hour protest at the entrance to the hotel.

Security was tight at the hotel but Gardai reported a trouble free event. Those attending the hunt ball had to pass protestors holding banners and posters calling for a ban on foxhunting and all forms of hunting with dogs.
