national / eu / press release Wednesday July 08, 2009 17:21 by Patricia McKenna
the Government is engaged in a cynical exercise of political manipulation. Speaking on behalf of the People’s Movement, which successfully campaigned against ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in last year’s referendum, McKenna said “these so-called ‘Legal Guarantees’ on the Lisbon Treaty are nothing more than an exercise in creative manipulation designed to mislead the public. This fact was even recognised by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin who after EU foreign ministers met in Luxembourg recently, said, “The impetus from other member states is to be helpful, creative and try to resolve these issues … We are quietly confident and hopeful,”

“What the Minister really means is that Legal guarantees on the Lisbon Treaty are just a creative way of giving people a feeling of legal certainty which does not and cannot exist.” Said McKenna read full story / add a comment

In recent weeks, EI member organisation Egitim-Sen and the Confederation of Public Employees’ Unions (KESK) .. have suffered a series of attacks by the Turkish authorities, including the occupation and searches of the trade union premises by the security forces, arrest and preventive detention of trade union leaders and the use of excessive violence by the police against teachers demonstrating peacefully (...) On 29 May 2009, EI, together with the ITUC, wrote to the Turkish Government to protest against these anti-union attacks. Egitim-Sen and KESK received support from many trade union organisations around the world. However the authorities disregarded the international appeals to stop the attacks. Join EI in our appeal to stop the attacks on trade unions! There are currently still 22 Egitim-Sen and KESK officials in detention, including the women secretaries of both organisations. Go to www.ei-ie.org/turkey to read/sign Urgent Action Appeal..

The Workers Solidarity Movement is calling on our fellow workers to support the national TEEU strike. This is an important battle for all of us, the first big blow against the employers’ wage-cutting agenda.

The strike is about an overdue 11% pay rise. The 10,500 TEEU members employed by electrical contractors at about 240 sites and factories have not been paid their agreed increases for more than three years. And now their employers want a 10% wage cut as well. read full story / add a comment

A boat full of humanitarian supplies to the Gaza Strip was seized in international waters by the Israeli army in recent days, with 21 crew (two Irish included) being detained by Israeli authorities. Yet another blatant breach of international law, our Government and others in the West have turned a blind eye. Israeli robbery of Palestinian land through settlement continues, along with their "security" wall, boxing in the West Bank while simultaneously taking large chunks out of it. They have recently stopped letting schoolbooks in to the Gaza Strip, adding to the long list of basic items unavailable to it's long suffering population. It is time for us in the West to wake up to the suffering of our friends in Palestine, and to stand up to the bully that is Israel. It is morally reprehensible to continue to watch such horror take place any longer. read full story / add a comment

I was never so glad as the day I quit drinking. Almost 20 years now. Alcohol is poison and destructive to the body. Worse, it lines the pockets of the rack renters. Come on Ireland. Awaken. The world fears that. Believe it. Marijuana is one of the most powerful expectorants known. It is a pain reliever, a euphoric, an appetite enhancer, and enhancer of certain other states of thinking and cognition familiar to its users, and very useful. Let us have some real Irish Green. read full story / add a comment

This afternoon seven Shell to Sea activists in kayaks visited the Toisa Independent, which supplies pipe to the Solitaire, a vessel used by Shell to lay the Corrib gas pipeline. The Solitaire, which left Broadhaven Bay (1) yesterday after laying the first section of pipe for the project, has been the target of several actions recently in the continual campaign against Shell. (2) Despite Shell's increasingly heavy handed response to protests, Shell to Sea activist's have continued their fight. (3) read full story / add a comment
