international / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Friday July 17, 2009 17:05 by Malcolm Smart
Amnesty International fears the wave of arrests of civil society activists in Iran is intensifying after the leading lawyer and women's human rights activist Shadi Sadr was violently arrested in Tehran this morning on her way to Friday prayers.

Shadi Sadr was walking with a group of women's rights activists along a busy road when unidentified plain-clothed men pulled her into a car. She lost her headscarf and coat in the ensuing struggle but managed briefly to escape. She was quickly recaptured and beaten with batons before being taken away in the car to an unknown location. read full story / add a comment

How low can they go?

Well the lowest I've found is a cutback of €2.6 million in funding to local groups which are fighting against the ravages of drug addiction. Just what you would expect from a smug upper middle class toadie of the ruling class like Colm McCarthy.

Colm McCarthy has declared War on the ordinary people of Ireland. The only suitable response is to declare War right back on him and his masters. read full story / add a comment

This is an article by a Tehran doctor who has witnessed the real number of people killed and wounde iby Islamic militias and police. Full article at link.

I have been working in a public hospital in Tehran over the last few weeks. The authorities are covering up the number of dead protesters and their causes of death. The official statistic is 20 dead – that's wrong. In our hospital alone there were 38 riot deaths in the first week. Most died from gunshot wounds. read full story / add a comment

Low pay. High stress. Constant surveillance. Here one day and outsourced the next. Call centre work has exploded in the last 20 years, but delivers precarious and highly exploitative jobs. This discussion and screening explores some of the ways in which workers are responding to life on the digital assembly line and reflects on how they and their allies might extend collective organizing within the call centre. Featuring clips from recent documentaries on call centre work in India and Italy, the evening will be devoted to sharing strategy and building links between call centre workers, trade unionists and community activists.

In this article Yassamine analyses the nature of the ongoing demonstrations. She points out that only conspiracy theorists belive that the protests were organised from outside Iran. She shows hoe thw actions of the working class are crucial at this conjuncture and finally she says that all sanctions against Iran must be opposed. Full article at url.

The continuation of demonstrations and protests against the Islamic republic of Iran, albeit on a smaller scale than two weeks ago, have fuelled further divisions at every level of the religious state: the Shia scholars of Ghom oppose the clerics in the Council of Guardians; leaders of the Pasdaran (Revolutionary Guard) are arrested for siding with the ‘reformist camp’; senior ayatollahs are divided, with Ali Saneii and Ali Montazeri declaring the election results fraudulent, while most other grand ayatollahs have remained loyal to the supreme leader.
