Sudan. Khartoum. Dharfour. Condolence Rice is "trouble shooting" the region at the moment and had scheduled a visit to the refugee camps to monitor conditions there and in particular the conditions of women. This morning at the press conference held with the President of Sudan and the US secretary for trouble shooting, Sudanese guards "man-handled" [sic] both the western journalists accompanying Miss Rice onboard her USAF jet but also members of her staff. Miss Rice reboarded her jet, and at about 11h00GMT the schedule went wrong, demands for apologies were made, US network TV smarts from the injury to its dignity, and the women of Dharfour camp became less important. Sudan has apologised. read full story / add a comment

The jailing of 5 Rossport men for refusing to allow Shell to install a potentially lethal pipeline has suddenly focussed attention on the whole project. But it has done more than highlight safety issues. It has highlighted the cosy relationship between business and the Irish State. Shell received a lucrative deal from the government in the late 1990s,minimum tax and no royalties to the state. Given that few jobs will be created in Mayo, it's hard to see what benefit there is for local people. read full story / add a comment

No Organiser, just a time and a date to be there. As it appears that the Tara issue is being hi-jacked at times, and that some people have a problem being associated with particular groups, a non-alligned protest is planned for 7.30pm on Thursday 28th of July at the site of the Tara dig, beside the Tara na Rí pub. All and everybody welcomed provided their interest is in genuinely saving the Tara valley, rerouting of M3 and ending the digging. To make it easy for everyone, the protest will be at 7.30pm meeting at the Tara na Rí pub beside the current dig site. read full story / add a comment

The 2 big issues today are Poverty and Global Warming - both caused ultimately by Western consumerism (Mandela: poverty is not natural - it is man-made. Bush: Our American way of life is not negotiable.) But if the rest of the world must catch up to American levels of consuming there would be a total environmental disaster - so how can we persuade American - and European - consumers to cut their ever-increasing greed? What if we just shared out equally over the whole world everything we already own or produce - would Western lifestyles really fall to a terribly low level? Details and statistics of such an equally-shared world for each of us. read full story / add a comment

A major bombshell was dropped on us An Post workers last Thursday, July 14TH when what we though was a Labour Court hearing about the fact that us An Post workers have still not received our pay increases under the "Sustaining Progress” pay deal going back to November 1ST 2003; was instead we were informed; that instead that The Labour Court had linked the payment of Sustaining Progress to the Collection and Delivery Agreement that is outstanding with the CWU! In other words, no one gets anything until this issue is resolved! read full story / add a comment
