100,000 plus people took to the streets of EU capital Brussels last Saturday 15th Feb, international anti-war day. 100,000 was reported by the mainstream media here but indymedia claims it was higher. The bureaucratic bourgeoisie capital was transformed for the day. Men, women, kids, dogs all came out in force to voice their strong opposition to the war on Iraq, plenty of colour, creativity, a beautiful day full of hope and solidarity. A large part of the demo also focused on the military use of the Belgian port Port D´anvers by the US in the lead up to their war on Iraq. 100,s of groups- Communists, Socialists, Greens, Fair Trade, students, everyone. No arrests reported. This huge demo on the 15th highlights the growing support for the mass anti war movement here in Brussels and Belgium itself. Peace. read full story / add a comment

With the brilliant 1000+ person feeder march from West Belfast {organised by the West Belfast anti war movement group} and Mondays equally brilliant 300+ school students at the School Students Against War {SSAW} debate, other groups are now starting to get organised. Around 100 Belfast Lecturers have signed up against war with also a teachers group established and other anti war groups of organised workers under way. The huge interest that SSAW in Belfast has drawn with their actions and TV, Radio slots they have got along with the media articles written about them has gathered them many hundreds of students to their debates and protests from catholic and protestant areas all around Belfast. Similiarly hundreds more have attended the local anti war activist meetings and groups all around Belfast with hundreds more again attending fundraising events. Iranian officials insist that force's role in the north is defensive but its presence will exacerbate the concerns of the US and especially the Arab world that military intervention in Iraq will lead to a permanent disintegration of the country. Freedland takes on the the "well, what would you do if you don't want to bomb the Iraqi people into freedom?" argument. Interesting suggestions include allowing the Hussein regime to sell oil but the money goes into a UN-controlled fund and is only released if democratic reforms are implemented. Last Saturday, February 15th, saw the largest demonstration in Dublin since the 1970’s. Approximately 150,000 (though figures vary, with the mainstream media cutting this number by half) people from dozens of different organisations and most from none gathered at the Garden of Remembrance to demonstrate their outrage at the upcoming war with Iraq. The use of the Garden of Remembrance as a meeting point was not unusual, though the sheer mass of numbers gathered all around Parnell Square and spilling out onto O’Connell Street was evidence of the massive popular disapproval in Ireland at the incipient escalation of hostilities against Iraq and in particular, of the use of Shannon airport as a refuelling depot for the U.S. military in transit. read full story / add a comment |
