Photojournalist Marc Vallée has accepted an apology and out-of-court settlement from the Metropolitan Police today, further to issuing proceedings against Sir Ian Blair, Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis for "Battery" (assault) and breaches of the Human Rights Act, relating to freedom of expression and assembly. read full story / add a comment

I spent about 10 years involved in voluntary community initiatives like local publishing, charity concerts, youth concerts. My motivation at that time was intensely political and leftist. I believed that the economy was a machine run by the merciless logic of profit and that any involvement in it meant unacceptable compromise. Therefore, my own political principles meant that I marginalised myself from any formal involvement with it. On the sidelines, from my Comfortable And Quite Elevated Chair of Ideological Analysis, it was crystal clear to me that Community Development was just a con-job. It was a ploy by The Elite to sap the revolutionary vigour of the people and co-opt potential revolutionaries. read full story / add a comment

Like the original Just Books we aim to provide titles on a range of topics. Yet again the US Occupation Forces have launched an attack on The Iraq Freedom Congress. In another poor move; the occupying troops has made another attempt to eliminate the voice of freedom from Iraq by raiding the IFC headquarter in Baghdad on 12 February when they forced themselves in, verbally and physically assaulted the guards and stood them out in the rain for several hours. It is understood from the many previous incidents that these attempts are not to look for weapons or investigations regarding terrorist activities; but in fact they are to intimidate and eliminate any voice that objects the occupation and its puppets. read full story / add a comment

James Turley writes on how in Respect Chris Bambery claimed that Secularism ‘justifies’ islamophobia. Yet now Socialist Worker demands separation of church and state. Bambery writes on islamophobia in media and establishment reactions to the speech. The Sun’s “bash the bishop” campaign and David Blunkett’s reference to something “external to this country” is a breath away from “there ain’t no black in the union jack”. The article implies that the pro-islam stance of the SWP has hardened since the break with Galloway. He writes that in spite of talk of muslim ‘backwardness’, many of the foundations of science were commonplace in islamic culture by the middle ages. True -science would not be doing well without the concept of zero. But it buys into the logic of the ‘clash of civilisations’. The idea of religions competing in some cosmic dog-show for the prize of ‘most progressive’ is ridiculous in itself without Bambery on the judges’ panel. read full story / add a comment

What No fanfare. I'm suprised at the lack of comment. I would have assumed as Time for Change are simply a left wing election vehicle they would have been crowing proudly at their excellent election result in the NIPSA GC election. NIPSA Unity on the other hand I would expect to be more pragmatic and modest. Let's face it they do have a lot to be modest about!! read full story / add a comment

Catherine Nevin’s appeal against her conviction for murder began in the Court of Appeal yesterday. Ms Nevin was convicted in 2000 of the murder of her husband Tom at their pub, Jack White's Inn, Brittas Bay, on March 19, 1996. The appeal will be based on evidence that prosecutors failed to disclose at her original trial that witnesses , William McClean and former provos Gerry Heapes and John Jones ,were long-standing police informers . Nevin’s lawyer ,Anne Fitzgibbon , is seeking access to classified documents including security files which indicate that Mr McClean was a suspect in the Dublin/Monaghan bombings of 1974. read full story / add a comment
