A protest by Irish fishermen is currently (Friday Feb 3rd 1pm) taking place on the Liffey by the IFSC in Dublin. A whole fleet of trawlers are currently on the Liffey making a racket with their horns. They are protesting over a new Sea Fisheries Maritime Jurisdiction Bill currently before the Dáil. Among the proposals int the new bill is an amendment to allow the Irish Navy open fire on trawlers, who disobeyed instructions. This has since been scrapped but there are many other amendments before the Dail which challenge the rights of these workers. See below for further details:- read full story / add a comment

Since 1998, when Hugo Chavez Frias became president of the newly declared Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the charismatic president, has emerged as one of the most influential and radical leaders in Latin America. His reforms and plans, if realised could alter the face of Venezuelan society, if not that of Latin America. Loathed by many Venezuelans, revered by even more, Chavez has reached almost messianic status as the leader in a country where the socially underprivileged, the poor and the uneducated masses have long since felt disenfranchised by the political process. read full story / add a comment

Animal rights group, the Captive Animals Protection Society (CAPS) has strongly criticised the decision by the Arts Council to allocate120,000 euros to Irish circuses containing animal acts, and described it as “further state funding for animal abuse by this government”. CAPS Irish spokesperson Nuala Donlon is calling on the Arts Council to reconsider its decision in light of the serious concerns about animal welfare and public safety which surround such travelling menageries. read full story / add a comment
