The Ireland-Palestine Campaign (IPSC) has learned that the 'Viva Palestina' convoy bringing humanitarian aid to Gaza is back on the road.

The convoy - which includes a number of vehicles and 10 people from Ireland - had been stranded on the Jordan/Egypt border because of the refusal of the Egyptian government to allow it to enter the country to complete the final leg of its 4,000 mile journey to Gaza. It was originally planned that the convoy would bring its aid via the Rafah crossing on 27 December.

The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) has just heard that Zoe Lawlor from Limerick and Hilary Minch from Dublin, both IPSC members, were among 23 Gaza solidarity activists taken off a bus to al Areish today by Egyptian police. Those detained are currently being brought back to Cairo under police escort. The police are holding their passports.

The 23 activists include two Irish, 15 Germans, two Palestinians, two Turks and three Americans. All were intending to participate in the 'Gaza Freedom March' on 31 December. The Egyptian government has systemically harassed the international delegates to the march since their arrival in Egypt and is refusing to allow them to cross into Gaza.

A contingent of several hundred French activists took over the boulevard in front of the French embassy in Cairo, Egypt, demanding buses to go to the Rafah crossing to Gaza on Sunday, December 28, in the late evening.

A group of French activists from the solidarity group EuroPalestine take over Mourad Street, the boulevard in front of the French Embassy in Cairo, next to the Four Seasons Hotel. They occupied the street with tents for 4 hours, stopping traffic, demanding buses to take them to the Gaza strip, forcing the French Ambassador to come and negotiate on their behalf.

Hedy Epstein, the 85 year old Holocaust survivor and peace activist, announced that she will begin a hunger strike today as a response to the Egyptian government’s refusal to allow the Gaza Freedom March participants into Gaza.

Ms. Epstein was part of a delegation with participants from 43 countries that were to join Palestinians in a non-violent march from Northern Gaza towards the Erez border with Israel calling for the end of the illegal siege. Egypt is preventing the marchers from leaving Cairo, forcing them to search for alternative ways to make their voices heard. read full story / add a comment
