Comhlámh (pronounced ‘co-law-ve', Irish for ‘solidarity') is a member and supporter organisation open to anyone interested in social justice, human rights and global development issues. Marking its 35th anniversary this year it connects, informs, educates and campaigns on these matters.

Comhlámh was set up originally in 1975 to support development workers returning home and to promote greater understanding of development issues in Ireland. Today the support we provide to development workers and volunteers before, during and after overseas assignments is a core element of our work. We also actively promote the continued involvement of returned development workers and volunteers in working for a better world from Ireland and provide a range of information and opportunities for how you can get involved. read full story / add a comment

Just when you thought thinks couldn't get any worse: now women are blamed for earthquakes!

A senior Iranian cleric says women who wear revealing clothing and behave promiscuously are to blame for earthquakes.

Iran is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries, and the cleric's unusual explanation for why the earth shakes follows a prediction by the president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, that a quake is certain to hit Tehran and that many of its 12 million inhabitants should relocate. read full story / add a comment

The Pirate Party of Ireland was disheartened to learn that the government is currently in the planning stages of establishing arbitrary internet censorship. What form this censorship will take when it is finally rolled out is quite opaque, but it would most certainly result in the blocking of many websites. Such a system will be ineffective in its goals, produce perverse effects, impose substantial costs, and reduce freedom of speech. read full story / add a comment

The Curia has protected the Pope with a venal beguile The defence of their errant priests and bishops is to launch an attack of a tripartite nature ; the church as victim; the blame lies with the victims; the problem was one of incipient homosexuality . The three factors were advanced separately over the past 10 days by the pope and 2 different theologians . Not just ordinary Curia sycophants , but doctrinaire heavy hitters.

Having chatted recently to many other people on the left so as to try and gauge the possibility of the broadest ever coming together of a revolutionary left alliance on this island, it appears that we are going to miss the best opportunity in making the biggest electoral impact by the genuine left in years. Too many parties/groups seem to be carrying too much historical baggage about each other. This party won't work with that party for this reason....that party won't work with anyone for some other reason....that party can't be trusted because of past mistakes....sniping.....backbiting.....nitpicking........petty grudges.....personalities.....sectarianism......our view is the right one......we have more experience.... blah blah blah blah blah.
