Rumours have been rife these last few days that Fidel Castro would make his first appearance since his autistic younger brother Raul took over the reins of power temporarily last 31 july. However, as the Cuban Mayday began to move a few hours ago - neither of the Castro brothers were to be seen.

Instead Salvador Valdés, secretary general of the Central Workers' union of Cuba led the march which Fidel has now missed twice. Raul Castro has never appeared in his official capacity nor been named as such in any broadcast by Havana.

ALLIANCE FOR CHOICE
CALLS ‘D’ CASE
A TRAGEDY WAITING TO HAPPEN

It was only a matter of time before another distressed young woman was forced to remind the Irish people of the disgraceful situation facing women in crisis pregnancies in this country. The HSE’s refusal to permit a young woman in their custody to terminate her non-viable pregnancy is consistent with the hypocrisy exhibited by successive Irish governments who have refused to deal with the issue. It is truly outrageous that this vulnerable young woman should be further traumatised by having to ask the courts for the right to terminate a pregnancy that can, at best, result in the birth of a child with no possibility of life. read full story / add a comment

I always had an interest in Irish History and many summers ago I spent time travelling around Ireland viewing old graveyards. I recall being below in West Cork and old farmer brought me to view three unmarked graves on his land. They were three old IRA men shot by the Tans in 1921. The farmer had written their names on three pieces of wood.

I walked through Letterfrack and I wondered if the rumours were true of the unmarked graves of little children. These children most likely died violently at the hands of Church and State. Some old men in small towns told me that if the secrets were unfolded, that Ireland was awash with babies left in bogs, and lakes. He said they not only drowned pups at that time, they drowned little children too. That men spoke to me in West Mayo.

It has come to our attention that Caleb McCarry, appointed by George
Bush as °transition co-ordinator" for Cuba, will be speaking in Dublin
on Monday next, 30 April, at 1:30 p.m. in the National University of
Ireland, Dublin (Belfield).

This individual should be confronted head on, and the Irish
academics who invited him also need to be made aware that they are giving a platform to a person who wishes to install a puppet government in Cuba.

Joan Collins is standing as an independent socialist in the coming general election. She was elected to Dublin City Council as an Anti-Bin-Tax Councillor. She is determined to present a real alternative to the people of South Central. She is part of and supported by the Community & Workers Action Group (CWAG), and by the Development Action Group (DAG).
Also speaking at the launch meeting was Brid Smith of the People Before Profit Alliance, who is standing in the Ballyfermot area of the constituency. We are calling for a Number 1 vote for Joan Collins; and a Number 2 for Brid Smith.
The CIL is asking people who want a genuine alternative to get involved in Joan's election campaign. We also call for all socialist and community activists to support and vote for anti-coalition leftwing candidates, including Joan Collins and Seamus Healy TD, the people Before Profit Alliance candidates, the Socialist Party candidates, the ISN candidate and Catherine Conolly in Galway. read full story / add a comment

The IPCC has warned that rising greenhouse gas emissions and global temperatures will lead to an increase in weather catastrophes such as hotter summers, warmer winters, droughts, melting of glaciers, rising of sea levels, stronger and more frequent hurricanes, and flooding. This timely event will explore what affects this will have on biodiversity and what we can do both globally and locally and as individuals and nations. read full story / add a comment
