On 27th September a sleep in protest to highlight the plight of homeless people in Ireland was staged outside Leinster House. Up till then I had no idea of the extent of homelessness in Ireland or how little the state seems to care about people who are homeless. I wrote down my impression of the events that night. What follows is my account of the few hours I spent in solidarity with my fellow citizens who have no place to call home. The only way homelessness will end in Ireland or anywhere else is if the people decide to end it. read full story / add a comment

The campaign is obviously continuing and our Tuesday night meetings will still go ahead. Anyone who is interested in the campaign is welcome to attend. Call Tadhg on 0876181620 or email [email protected], or just show up.

For this Tuesday the Tailor's Hall at Christchurch is unavailable- therefore we will meet at the EENGO office on Camden Street.

EENGO is where we used to hold the Shell to Sea meetings -
10a Lower Camden Street,
above a shop called Bounty Stores,
across the road from the Camden Palace.

There is a slight chance that EENGO may be also be unavailable- keep an eye on this listing-we promise we'll post any change as soon as we know. read full story / add a comment

It has been exactly one year since the arrest on October 3 2004 of "Mikel Antza" (Mikel Albizu born 1961), a writer attributed with leading the organisation ETA since 1992, thought to be directly responsible for 120 deaths.
He was arrested with his partner "anboto" (Soledad Iparagirre - born 1961) who is blamed for 14 deaths.

They were detained in a villa at Salíes-de-Béarn with 17 other presumed members of ETA, a quantity of arms, 1,300 kilograms of explosive and two SAM7 rocket launchers (supplied by irish dissident republicans).

This morning the succesors to that couple were arrested (also in France) along with a quantity of arms in the 6th joint operation between Spain and France aimed at the total disarticulation of the terrorist group. read full story / add a comment

Today's editorial in the Irish Times asserts that:

"Shell's proposals went through the full gamut of the planning process during which those who objected were given full rights to make known their views" (!!!)

Further on it praises the Judge who had the five men locked up:

"Mr Justice Finnegan, President of the High Court, stood alone in recent weeks in upholding the rule of law, a duty he executed with exemplary even-handedness and for which he deserves to be thanked. " (!!!!!!) read full story / add a comment

Warren Mitofsky, founder-president of one of the two polling firms that conducted the exit polls in the US presidential elections of November 2004, has agreed to debate the likely cause of the significant discrepancies between the exit poll data, which predicted that John Kerry would win with a margin of 3% of the popular vote, and the final vote tallies, which returned George Bush to the White House with a margin of 2.5%.

The debate will be sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Organizational Dynamics and Department of Political Science, and will take place at lunchtime in Logan Hall, 249 South 36th Street, Philadelphia, on 14 October. For further details, please see the university's announcement below. read full story / add a comment
