The evacuation of New Orleans in the face of Hurricane Ivan looked sinisterly like Strom Thurmond's version of the Rapture. A potentially landmark Human Rights case resulting from a year-long dispute between Belfast City Council and the free cultural newspaper The Vacuum is due to take place on Tuesday 13th September 2005. This is the first courtcase against a municipal government on violation of the human rights legislation put in place from the peace process - and its not happening along traditional sectarian lines. Just the opposite- nonsectarians stood up for themselves and political parties across sectarian lines in the Belfast City Council voted to censor them. Now the whole snarl is going to court as free expression and human rights in the North square off against bipartisan bigotry . read full story / add a comment

See how the fat cats network: "Alongside O'Leary at this press briefing sat David Bonderman - boss of Texas Pacific, who own Gate Gourmet - and the man O'Leary hopes will bankroll his medieval pillaging of the rest of the airline industry. O'Leary and Bonderman (who, incidentally, is also chairman of Ryanair) are already tied up through their joint interest in Texas Pacific, the venture capital firm which took over Gate in 2003. Bonderman is so loaded that he spent an estimated $7 million on his birthday party - with live music from the Rolling Stones, no less, and a stand-up routine from Robin Williams." read full story / add a comment
