In a move that not only mimics the Bush tactics on illegal detention Obama is "crafting language for an executive order that would reassert presidential authority to incarcerate terrorism suspects indefinitely." The Washington Post observes, "Such an order would embrace claims by former president George W. Bush that certain people can be detained without trial for long periods under the laws of war." read full story / add a comment

The Iranian Socialist Organisation Rahe Kargar analyses the current situation in Iran and says that it is time to move from street demonstrations to a General Strike. Full text at link. The call for a general strike has been put forward by a number of tendencies active in the current protest movement inside Iran and is gaining increasing support amongst Iranian activists outside. In my opinion, ignoring such calls is ignoring the challenging potential of the mass movement we and the world are witnessing in total amazement, a protest whose brave steps are witnessed with great admiration. read full story / add a comment

For years, recruitment to the British army has failed to meet its targets, but as a result of the growing economic crisis the number of young people joining is on the increase, particularly unemployed youth from working-class communities. That has always been the case: they want young people to die defending the interests of the rich and powerful. read full story / add a comment

It may no longer be hot off the presses, but the analysis of the recent European and local elections which appeared in the June 21st edition of the Sunday Business Post has something of the flavour of workhouse gruel about it. Unpalatable when hot, positively stomach-churning when allowed to cool and fester for seven days. read full story / add a comment

On 8 June 2009 Mr Justice (Sir) Declan Morgan delivered the judgment in the marathon Omagh civil case. The judgment delivery ended the year long hearing leaving more questions unanswered than answered with its content less than convincing. The burden of proof in civil cases is based on the laws of probability and in this case Mr. Justice Morgan stretched the probability rule well outside the boundaries. The judgment in its entirety contained multiple ambiguities and inevitably the defendants will appeal. One can only assume that Mr Morgan is a highly intelligent man by the very fact that he has recently been elevated to the office of Lord Chief Justice, however this particular judgment may come back to haunt him. read full story / add a comment

Workers from across London will be giving up their lunch hour today (Friday) to attend a protest outside the Iranian Embassy against its Government's harsh treatment of trade unionists, something which is feared will get even worse in the wake of the current street demonstrations. Long before the current crackdown against Iranians disputing the recent presidential election result, the Government had been harassing and intimidating trade unionists. In Iran members of independent trade unions are frequently beaten up or thrown into prison. And there are concerns that attacks on trade unionists will increase as protesters look for other ways of demonstrating against the regime by taking part in strikes and other work-related protests read full story / add a comment
