The Gardai are being placed in a position where the whole responsibility of road safety is being placed on their shoulders and supported by the Road Safety Authority. According to Bertie, we re all to blame for the carnage so stand back and be prepared to be wipped and later fined for such blatent abuse of our road traffic regulations. Dont blame the government, they try and do their best but people insist in driving cars and causing damage. Read on read full story / add a comment

The middle of the twentieth century was the last occasion a belligerent nation stunned the world with violent military invasions. The major powers watched passively while a rogue military nation boldly occupied a number of sovereign states; the excuses offered by the aggressor at that time were similar to the inane, irrational rubbish the world is offered today by Israel and the U.S. However, some would make the distinction that the comments made by John Bolton and Condoleezza Rice are even less believable than the propaganda of Dr. Joseph Goebbels. read full story / add a comment

FOCUS Ireland launches research which highlights Low Social & Affordable Housing under Part V

· Part V can still play a key role in delivering housing if report’s recommendations are acted upon
· Focus Ireland argues that cash payments in lieu of social & affordable housing should be avoided and only used as a “last resort”

Focus Ireland today launched “Building For Inclusion” - a research report that examines the effectiveness of Part V of the Planning and Development Act 2000-2004. First introduced in 2000, Part V of the Planning and Development Acts is widely known for the provision allowing local authorities to insist that up to 20 per cent of land in most housing developments be reserved for social and affordable housing.

Since its introduction the legislation has been never far from the headlines - when first introduced it was heavily resisted by the construction industry, referred to the Supreme Court to test its constitutionality and amended by the Government in 2002.

One of the intimacies of war is death and lamentation.
It was one of the intimacies of civilised society too, before the issue of
death becme a taboo, something to be fought and dominated. Especially
within the capitalist framework, wherein a few days entitlement to remove yourself
from the rat-race is the nod to the process of grief.
Wakes, in the houses of the head were a common practice in Irish society. They were
structured rituals which involved every member of the family and extended family
in their individual capacity as mourner, story-teller, Keener and waiter. read full story / add a comment

Has the media has been lying to us all along to justify the horrific Israeli military action against Lebanon?

We have all been told that Hezbollah breached Israeli borders and captured Israeli soldiers from behind the Israeli lines and this has been the justification for the annialation of lebanon and the killing of around 400 lebanese people and 4 U.N. observers. read full story / add a comment

I am a Palestinian Muslim living in Ireland and I must speak out against the war against Israel which is bringing war down on Muslim heads in return.
Take another look the map of Israel.
It is a tiny sliver of land been the Mediterranean and the Jordan River.
If Israel was not militarily powerful holding back the enormous miltary forces of Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia would be simply impossible. In a matter of hours Israel would be invaded if armies broke through the defences of the Golan Heights or crossed the Jordan River valley, encompassing the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, or swept through the Negev and surrounded Al Quds and Tel Aviv from three sides.

In two seperate incidents this evening, members of Circus SYDNEY(a Courtney Circus / previously Circus OZZ and Circus NEW YORK) assaulted different activists both inside and outside the circus.

The first incident happened when some activists from The Alliance for Animal Rights were giving out flyers on the footpath outside the Circus now in Blackrock. A circus member attempted to get one by the neck and take their leaflets.

The second incident happened when four people including two minors and a wild animal expert attended the actual show. A female was set upon by a circus member and had her digital camera snatched and batteries removed. She had to attend St Vincents Hospital for treatment for a possible joint fracture in her hand, she was also verbally threatened. Activists called for Gardai assistance.

Gardai were notified on both occasions.

By now most western Europeans with fair to middling interest in current affairs know that the UN observers in southern Lebanon, observed in time that Israeli artillery shells were landing close to their position. Ireland which prides itself on leading the way in UNIFIL operations knows how many phone calls were made - 10. We also all pride ourselves on knowing the mandate finishes next Monday.
Most of the UN observers stationed with UNIFIL at that observer post were Indian, though those killed weren't. The first reports to hit Indian newswatchers that their own soldiers were in the line of fire came from the BBC who had their own team "observing" in the same little zone. This is how things work :- FINUL, the UN, the BBC, the government & army of Lebanon, the government & army of Israel, and even Hezbollah exchange phone numbers. They tell each other where they are. So "little accidents" like "friendly fire" don't happen. Otherwise indeed the whole idea of "UN peace-keeping" which started 50 years ago with the thereafter Nobel peace laureate, former prime minister of Canada Lester B. Pearson, would fall apart at the seams. So I thought I'd give you a round-up of Indian media reaction since as we all realise the UNIFIL mandate expires next Monday :-

(we did all realise that didn't we???????????)

Every hunting season it's a regular occurrence for Saboteurs to be beaten up, some murdered, hospitalised, have their transport damaged and their personal belongings stolen by hunters and supporters. It's very seldom that anyone is charged. And if they are it's usually just a slap on the wrist.
But when the table is turned, it's a totally different story. read full story / add a comment

In the Pitstop Ploughshares case at the Four Courts, the Judge's charging of the jury on Friday was difficult to hear. Three members of the public asked that the sound be turned up, - but without success.
On Monday the Judge went through the evidence of the defendants and the defence witnesses at break-neck speed and sent the jury out at ten past three to consider if they could reach a unanimous verdict.
This is a report on what followed in court on Monday and Tuesday.
