The Government has been severely criticised for announcing it will use money raised by the plastic bag levy on road construction rather than putting it into an environment fund as promised. Irish environmental non-Government organisations described the move as "an outrage and a kick in the teeth for both the environment and the Government's own claimed policy on sustainability and support for environmental action". read full story / add a comment

AROUND 150,000 people marched through the Italian city of Genoa last weekend to mark the first anniversary of the anti-capitalist protests against world leaders at the G8 summit. In a moving show of defiance and solidarity, protesters commemorated the police killing of protester Carlo Giuliani last year. "Carlo is alive and fighting through us," was one of the march's slogans. Students occupied the Diaz school, where police viciously attacked sleeping protesters last year, for three days before the protest. read full story / add a comment

that was held in the Four Seasons last month. Lots of 'world leaders' and supposedly about awards to postgrads. Well Joe Higgins TD has got a bit more information about it from the Dept. of Justice, namely that it cost us tax payers E300,000 in 'security costs'. Remember these politcians were here on a 'private' visit, so why do we have to pay for them. Silly question, I know. read full story / add a comment

July 24, 2002 (12:53) A number of traveller families whose caravans have been seized by Gardaí in the Ennis area have begun High Court proceedings for the return of their vehicles. During the hearing, counsel for Clare County Council said it was in a position to provide, on an emergency basis, a large mobile home at Liscannor, where the travellers had been located previously. Mr. Justice Roderick Murphy asked if it would be more equitable for the travellers' own caravans to be returned to them pending further proceedings rather than supplying a mobile home to them. Counsel for the Gardaí said he would have to take instructions on the Judge's proposal. The Judge has adjourned the case until later today to allow time for consultations to take place. The court heard that the families, which have several children, have been broken up because of the caravan seizures. It is understood that read full story / add a comment

The woman fumbled and cursed. She was running out of change. When she opened her café around the corner from Piazza Alimonda, she had no idea what was about to descend around her. Outside, a steady stream of people passed on their way to where Carlo Giuliani was shot dead during the G8 protests, one year ago. read full story / add a comment
