The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul has urged people to make waste collection charges an issue in the local elections.

The charity has said increasing numbers are calling its helpline for assistance due to the privatisation of public service providers, which refuse to offer waiver systems for those on low incomes.

Society Vice-President John Monaghan has said people who are not even on social welfare are contacting them. "At the head office on the Cabra Road, which only deals with the Dublin area, the number of calls to the society in April 2002 was about 350 in a month. In 2003 it had gone up to 550, and April this year it had gone up to over 1200. Many of those were first time callers, people who are in work but on low pay and are struggling." read full story / add a comment

Members of Anti War Ireland are disgusted and outraged at the recent killings in Palestine and Iraq, not just at the killings themselves, but also at the ongoing list of abuses of human rights in the Middle East, especially the most basic right to life. We are outraged also at the lack of effective action by the UN and the international community. read full story / add a comment

In the run up to the Mayday protests, the Dublin Grassroots Network suddenly leapt to prominence and almost became a household name. However, despite all the coverage, there was little examination of the nature of this network that organised most of the Mayday protests. This text briefly describes the network, where it came from, who is involved, how it works and where it is going. For those who want to find out more or get involved, there is a public meeting at 2:30pm on Saturday May 22nd in the Teachers Club on Parnell Square, where we will be talking about the good and bad of the Mayday weekend and our plans for the Bush visit. More details at the link below. read full story / add a comment

Following the horrific Israeli actions in Gaza yesterday where Israeli forces fired tank shells directly into a crowd of peaceful Palestinian protestors, killing at least 10, including children return from school, and injuring over 50 more, the IPSC is calling on all concerned peoples to offer support and solidarity to Palestinians. Despite a UN security Council resolution calling for a stop to killings and demolitions, the Israeli occupying army killed 5 more Palestinians last night and have said they will continue with house demolitions.

The protest will be this evening at the Israeli Embassy, Ballsbridge from 5pm to 7pm to protest at Israel's continuing 'war crimes' (ref United Nations & Amnesty International) against the Palestinians.

John Fitzgerald, the City Manager, wants to rezone the park and put a new waste depot and dump in it. To do this he has to materially contravene the City Development Plan and rezone the park. He is trying to use legislation for the first time to allow him to rezone the park without a vote of the City Councillors.

"Emergency Protest East Link Bridge on Wednesday 19th May at 6pm

The Irish Anti-War Movement condemns the arrival of the USS La Salle,
from the US Sixth Fleet into Irish waters. The ship is stationed in
Alexandria Basin on a supposedly "goodwill visit" and claims that its
area of responsibility includes the North Atlantic.

The IAWM further notes that the missile system on the USS La Salle is capable
of firing 3,000 uranium bullets per minute. Depleted uranium weaponry
has brought an increase in cancer rates in both Iraq and the Balkans." read full story / add a comment
