This is an extract from a WSM article on Islam. It is timely that it should be brought forward again. It challenges many of the ortodoxies of the "Left" and Liberals who have prostrated themselves before Islam. Thes e perhaps are the most important couple of sentences: "Anarchists have a long and proud tradition of fighting the power of organised religion, including in countries like Spain fighting fascist gangs formed on a religious basis. While we recognise the freedom of people to hold a religion we also recognise that there has to be a freedom from religion - an idea that runs against the basis of Islam." Read and enjoy. The full article is at the link below. read full story / add a comment

A look at the recent work of SETI. The creationism debate is rekindled by scientists enlisting the clergy in the US to keep God out of classrooms. A new version of creationism is discussed with regard to education and commercial media. The incompleteness of evolution is examined. The interesting theory of Panspermia is shown to be a likely addition to the theory of evolution. read full story / add a comment

An interesting thesis by Alan Woods on the future of class struggle on a world basis. Alan Woods was a leading member of the British militant tendency who split with the grouping over it's decision to break with the labour party and form the English and Welsh Socialist Party and Scottish Militant Labour, forerunner to the Scottish Socialist Party. He believes socialists should remain inside the labour party as it is the only vehicle to create change, even with the emptying out of the party under Blair. Although most activists would have little time for Blair's new Labour Wood's thesis is well researched and makes very interesting reading. Although personally I would fundamentally disagree with much of Woods ideas, especially those on the modern social democratic parties his thesis is an excellent basis for a debate on europe, china the usa and more. I think most would agree that the entering of China into the capitalist world market should have a few suprises along the way. And his comments on the Italian situation also makes interesting reading. hs read full story / add a comment

The Fianna Fail Roadshow lumbered down to the dept of the Environment* headed up by Dick Roche to unveil the new Planning and development Bill, subtitled the Strategic Infrastructure Bill (2006). The crony lobby headed up by IBEC, CIF and other nice organisations involved in heritage grabbing (KMPG, and NRA) had their day. Since the abolition of Duchas in 2003 , the outdated(undated) Code of Practice governing the NRA re the identification, excavation and destruction of our history, there have been two planning acts. when Mr Roche was asked if there'd be a separate and equivalent legislation read full story / add a comment

Various survivors of the Bhopal Gas Leak and activist supporters, about 150 individuals, are embarking on a month long padayatra [protest march on foot] from Bhopal to Delhi, which is a distance of approx. 800km. They are setting out from the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal on 20th February and hope to reach New Delhi by the end of March. They will stop along the way in various other areas/communities that have been affected negatively by industrial pollution to share stories and establish connections. They will be walking 25-35 kilometers per day. When they arrive in Delhi there will be a big day of support and final walk to the Prime Minister's Office with various other groups from Delhi joining for the last leg to make their support for the demands of the campaigners clear. read full story / add a comment

Cork Harbour Alliance for a Safe Environment are determined to prevent the incinerators proposed for Ringaskiddy. Despite recent government attempts to impose incineration on communities all over the country, there is now a growing national awareness that this solution to our waste problems is sheer lunacy. Anti-incinerator and other environmentally motivated groups are now joining forces to send a clear and unambiguous message to the government: stop taking us for fools. read full story / add a comment

From me: Quote: "tackling barriers faced by students with disabilities, LGBT students, Muslim students etc" From Richie: Quote: "Well of course That's important, however i believe that it is not as important ascatering, printing or the library. If you want equality prioritised over these issues then perhaps you should vote for mariel. They are part of my goals but they are not my number one priority" read full story / add a comment
