[From the Free Gaza Movement]

Dear Friends,

We have unconfirmed reports from al-Jazeera and via text message that Israeli Naval Forces have stopped and boarded the Spirit of Humanity on its way to Gaza. We're not sure if our folks are being arrested yet or not.

Irish Citizens Mairead Corrigan Maguire (Nobel Laureate) and Derek Graham (First Mate, FGM, IPSC) are on board, as is former US Congressperson Cynthia McKinney.

It sure is turning out to be a hot summer, so you’d really want to be given a decent reason for staying in and watching TV. In that case, it’s a good thing the new DCTV schedule is out.

CONNOLLY YOUTH MOVEMENT CONDEMN COUP IN HONDURAS

The Connolly Youth Movement condemns in the strongest possible terms the military coup that has taken place in the Republic of Honduras. The kidnapping and exiling from the country of, the democratic and rightful President, Manuel Zelaya, is an outrageous affront to democracy and stinks of Yankee involvement. The Connolly Youth Movement calls for President Zelaya to be returned to power in Honduras and for those traitors in the military, who moved against him, to stand down. The CYM echoes the words spoken by the Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla in denouncing “the criminal and brutal character of this coup d’etat.” read full story / add a comment

In a move that not only mimics the Bush tactics on illegal detention Obama is "crafting language for an executive order that would reassert presidential authority to incarcerate terrorism suspects indefinitely." The Washington Post observes, "Such an order would embrace claims by former president George W. Bush that certain people can be detained without trial for long periods under the laws of war." read full story / add a comment

The Iranian Socialist Organisation Rahe Kargar analyses the current situation in Iran and says that it is time to move from street demonstrations to a General Strike. Full text at link.

The call for a general strike has been put forward by a number of tendencies active in the current protest movement inside Iran and is gaining increasing support amongst Iranian activists outside. In my opinion, ignoring such calls is ignoring the challenging potential of the mass movement we and the world are witnessing in total amazement, a protest whose brave steps are witnessed with great admiration. read full story / add a comment

For years, recruitment to the British army has failed to meet its targets, but as a result of the growing economic crisis the number of young people joining is on the increase, particularly unemployed youth from working-class communities. That has always been the case: they want young people to die defending the interests of the rich and powerful. read full story / add a comment

It may no longer be hot off the presses, but the analysis of the recent European and local elections which appeared in the June 21st edition of the Sunday Business Post has something of the flavour of workhouse gruel about it. Unpalatable when hot, positively stomach-churning when allowed to cool and fester for seven days. read full story / add a comment
