The “New American Century” (PNAC) and the “Thousand Year Reich”, shared a similar preposterous vision; a crude blend of wishful thinking, fantasy and religiosity. However, the chronologically modest American ‘vision’ is no less dangerous and destructive a model; in fact, the potential for destruction on a scale never before seen is inherent is the ‘New American (graveyard) Century’. read full story / add a comment

General Sir Michael Rose (1940–) is a British soldier born in what was then British India. Rose was educated at St Edmund Hall, Oxford and the Sorbonne. He joined the Coldstream Guards later serving with the Parachute Regiment. He was Commander of 22 SAS in 1980 and took control of the operation to free the hostages during the Iranian Embassy Siege. After returning to the regular army, his best-known appointment was as Commander UNPROFOR Bosnia 1994-95 during the aftermath of the Yugoslav Wars. On January 9, 2006, Rose called for Tony Blair to be impeached over the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, saying on BBC Radio 4's Today programme "To go to war on what turns out to be false grounds is something that no one should be allowed to walk away from." He then followed up the BBC radio 4 interview with an opinion piece in The Guardian:- ___________________________________ read full story / add a comment

Slavoj Žižek analyses the US propganda machine's attempt to make torture acceptable in the series "24", which takes up the Alan Dershowitz "ticking terrorist bomb" scenario and decides that torturing will work. It's interesting that Hollywood is still seen as "liberal" and "anti-patriotic" when it performs such a vital role in spreading propaganda to the citizens of the US. Žižek discusses the method in which Himmler's subordinates were able to carry out their vile work and suggests that the same process is at work in US culture. read full story / add a comment

SEANAD leader Mary O'Rourke was last night in hot water after saying some of her campaign helpers had worked "like blacks". On the otherhand, there have been few Dail or Seanad politicians as critical of Irish racism and indeed, State immigration policies, as Mary O'Rourke. Surely it was an unfortunate gaffe. read full story / add a comment

We continue to kowtow to the present incumbent of the White House using all kinds of lame excuses for so doing. Enough! Let us end the empty charade of "friendship" with this man now and demand that our leaders present him with no more bowls of shamrock, an idea already tainted by the events surrounding 17 March 2003. read full story / add a comment

The Irish company "Daniel Technologies" was gloating about it's role in a contract signed between the Irish military and an Israeli manufacturer of helmuts yesterday. In a "puff" piece, free of any political or social context in the Sunday Business Post yesterday Stephen Roe, managing director of Daniel Technologies, said the awarding of the contract last month followed a “tough and lengthy'‘ test and evaluation period. No mention was made of the fact that the Israeli company in question calls the IDF its most important customer. Or no reference of course to the IDF occupation of Palestine. http://www.sbpost.ie/post/pages/p/story.aspx-qqqt=DONE%20DEAL-qqqs=themarket-qqqid=10821-qqqx=1.asp read full story / add a comment

Abortion has become a central issue in the forthcoming general election in Italy. Berlusconi’s government has set up a review into the application of the present law, which allows abortion within the first three months of pregnancy. Less than 24 hours after making a key note speech to a meeting of Spain's armed forces, Lt. General Jose Mena Aguado has been placed under house arrest for 8 days as a "first measure" for suggesting armed action against Catalonia. He thus overstepped his position as a member of the military, and now enjoying support from the right wing opposition (PP) the incident takes on worrying implications for European Democracy. ____________________________________ read full story / add a comment

In one of his daily letters to Danish prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen and foreign minister Per Stig Mřller, prize-winning journalist Bo Elkjćr refers to a statement by a State Department official that the United States will conduct future wars through the deployment of ad-hoc coalitions of the willing, similar to that which invaded Iraq in March 2003, rather than relying on established institutions such as NATO or the United Nations to resolve conflicts. Bo Elkjćr shared the prestigious Cavling prize for the year 2003 for his work in publishing meticulously detailed documentation for the falsification of the basis for Danish participation in the invasion of Iraq. Contrary to Danish principles of transparency, the prime minister and foreign minister are refusing to grant Elkjćr an interview in which they might reply to his many pointed questions. read full story / add a comment
