Fighting continued for a second day on Wednesday between Iraqi soldiers and members of an Iranian opposition group whose camp was stormed Tuesday on orders from Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.The US is obligated to the MEK (People's Mujahedin of Iran, Mujaheddin-e Khalq) because it provided information about Iran's nuclear program and because US officials promised to protect them after the 2003 invasion of Iraq. MEK member Behzad Saffari said that Iraqi troops were stopping injured people going to hospitals outside the group's camp Ashraf. read full story / add a comment

"We will set the standards for delivering health and social care services and we will continuously inspect to ensure that these standards are being met."

"We will help deliver value for your money by monitoring that the resources in our health and social services are used in a way which delivers the best outcome for the patient or service user."

The above lines taken from the front page of HIQA’s web site strike me as being rather gung-ho. It appears that HIQA is setting itself up like some martinet intent on squeezing performance out of unwilling minions. read full story / add a comment

On the 22nd and 23rd of July the Irish Times published two articles, by Northern Editor, Gerry Moriarty reporting from Israel where he spent the best part of a week with a group of other Irish journalists embedded at the invitation of the Israeli Ministry of foreign-affairs, politicians, charity workers, community activists, religious, business and medical people and ordinary civilians.

Reading the articles his hosts must have been well pleased with their efforts to rehabilitate Israel’s tarnished image in the wake of its latest massacre in Gaza. Anyone familiar with Israel’s brutal subjugation of the Palestinian people would be forgiven for thinking that Mr. Moriarty must have enjoyed a little too much of his hosts hospitality before writing the articles.

With every disaster a new opportunity emerges. Respectable capitalists swoop in quickly– operating in complete legality but equally willing shake down as many people for as much money as possible. PwC has employed the amazing hubris and grotesque efficiency typical of capitalism. No carcass to slim; no pocket book too picked.

We travelled to every county that has a fur farm, tabled and leafleted in the major town near each farm, and protested outside all 5 mink farms - something that has never been done before, and something that we pledge to keep doing on a regular basis. read full story / add a comment

Amnesty reports on the situation in Nicaragua where pregnant women are being refused necessary medical treatment. This has led to an increase in maternal deaths. Full story at link.

Nicaragua’s total ban on abortions is endangering the lives of girls and women, denying them life-saving treatment, preventing health professionals from practicing effective medicine and contributing to an increase in maternal deaths across the country, concludes Amnesty International in a new report issues on Monday.

According to official figures, 33 girls and women have died in pregnancy this year as compared to 20 in the same period last year. Amnesty International believes these figures are only a minimum as the government itself has acknowledged that the number of maternal deaths is under-recorded.
