NATO bombing, no solutionJust eight years after they launched their shock-and-awe devastation of Baghdad and ten years after their invasion of Afghanistan, the same Western forces are pummelling yet another Muslim state with bombs, burning soldiers and tanks and killing civilians in the process. Yet again, the claim is that their intervention is a question of moral principle. The passing of the UN security Resolution 1973 which authorised the bombing, was held up as an attempt to protect the Libyan rebels and stop Gaddafi brutally slaughtering his people. Why, then, did the same Western powers provide Gaddaffi with the arms that are now slaughtering the Libyan people? read full story / add a comment

The ongoing Fukushima nuclear crisis has raised numerous concerns, the candor of pronouncements regarding the reality of circumstances being one of them. As many wonder what the future will hold, the events reported in this article suggest some possible conclusions, the facts being less than reassuring. Full text and links to article's source documents only available on Common Dreams at url below. As radiation counts elevate in Japan, news of nuclear contamination spreading across a widening spectrum of life and its necessities, official pronouncements continue to play down events’ gravity. While some have questioned whether this is being pursued to promote calm, or perhaps the nuclear industry, the result has left many either skeptical of official claims or simply reassured by them. Shell have restarted work in Mayo, starting construction on fencing around the compound, apparently a protest was violently broken up this morning. Maura Harrington is also in court today. Shell choose their day to start construction carefully, when several campaigners were on their way to support Maura Harrington who has been summonsed for sentencing for charges that are now over a year old. This action is widely seen as blackmail by the State in an effort to end Mrs Harringtons resistance to the pipeline. The timing of Shell's action's today suggests they are being provided details of when court cases are happening, there have already been many arrests that have been timed to remove campaigners from the area at other key phases in the construction, most notably the 2008 and 2009 arrests of Pat O'Donnell while he worked at sea in order to allow the pipe lying ship the Solitaire to lie pipes across his fishing grounds. As society tears itself apart and reactionary forces come to the fore, well organised and confident of success. The left, the anti-authoritarians, the radicals and alternatives are in utter disarray. The only glimpse of light in the darkness of a seemingly overwhelming anti-liberation tsunami has been the acts of publicised resistance by the Anarchists in London and Greece. Although more spectactular pantomime for televison consumers. Defend trade union rights. Support sacked Dublin Bus shop steward. Protest Rally Wed April 6th, from 12 till 2pm Outside NBRU office on Parnell Sq West, Dublin 1. It is 12 months since Dublin Bus dismissed Eugene McDonagh, the National Executive of the NBRU in Harristown Garage over an unofficial dispute in 2009. The dispute arose over management’s decision to rush in changes on drivers schedules’ without adequate consultation. The unofficial action affected five garages over three days and involved over a thousand drivers. But Eugene was the only worker sacked after a lengthy investigation that involved widespread intimidation and threats against drivers by management. read full story / add a comment

SUMMARY: If the State, in the name of the Irish people, prosecutes you wrongfully or maliciously, and the State loses, you can sue for damages. When you are good and ready to go ahead, the State can send you a letter ordering you to appear in another court where they will ask another judge to strike out your case. The reasons given are usually that your case is "vexatious" or "unlikely to succeed". Or if you fall ill and under doctor's orders, the reason could be "for want of prosecution". Kevin Tracey's six cases were struck out by the President of the High Court on 4 March last. His doctor's and hospital consultant's certificates were deemed by the Judge to be inadequate. He is allowed to "appeal" to the Supreme Court but as a lay litigant who is still under doctor's orders, the odds are stacked against him to carry through or win such an appeal. read full story / add a comment

Shatter condemns criticisms of judiciary in wake of tribunal The Justice Minister Alan Shatter has hit out at what he has called "intemperate attacks" on the judiciary. Alan Shatter's released a statement this evening, condemning a number of comments made in the wake of the Moriarty report published earlier this week, which he said were "intended to bring the judiciary into disrepute and to undermine public confidence in the administration of justice." Minister Shatter said the statements which he claimed " endanger public confidence" in the judiciary and the courts, are "entirely unacceptable and are to be deplored". Both former Minister Michael Lowry and Businessman Denis O'Brien have been critical of Mr. Justice Michael Moriarty in the wake of the report. Following his recent election to the Irish Parliament Joe Higgins the Socialist Party / CWI MEP for Dublin was obliged to announce his replacement as MEP from the election substitute list. Today the Socialist Party announced that Paul Murphy will be the new Socialist Party / CWI MEP to take over from Joe Higgins. Paul Murphy has been a Parliamentary Assistant to Joe Higgins since the 2009 Euro elections. read full story / add a comment

In October 2010, the Irish website Count Me Out, which had until then supplied the forms needed to carry out formal Defection from the Roman Catholic Church, suspended distribution of the forms and its own activity as a result of a statement from the Catholic Church in Ireland regarding the acceptance of defection requests. But was the Archdiocese of Dublin being truthful when it issued its statement?
