I travelled by Malev Airlines through Budapest from Dublin Airport to Thessaloniki on Tuesday for the first assembly in 6 years of ENUSP (European Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry). A conference; workshops; an election of a new board representative of all the regions of Europe; and an open air concert in Aristotle Square, the principal civic square in Thessaloniki, on Thursday night at the end of the conference. Stephen Lendman writes on the latest US sponsored Coup attempt, this time in Ecuador. This time it failed as did the attempts to overthrow Hugo Chavez. Stephen shows how the Bush destabilisation and removal of progressive regimes has continued under Obama. Full text at link.

Post-9/11, Washington sponsored four coup d'etats. Two succeeded - most recently in Honduras in 2009 against Manuel Zelaya, and in Haiti in 2004 deposing Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Two others failed - in Venezuela in 2002 against Hugo Chavez, and on September 30 in Ecuador against Rafael Correa - so far. Two by Bush, two by Obama with plenty of time for more mischief before November 2012. read full story / add a comment

"The neoliberals are fully in control of the bureaucracy, and they are reviving Margaret Thatcher's slogan, TINA: There Is No Alternative. But there is, of course. In the small Baltic economies, pro-labor parties have made it clear that the alternative to government shrinkage is to simply repeal the debts, withdraw from the Euro and break the banks. It is either the banks or labor - and Europe has just realized that this is truly a fight to the economic death. And the first test will come this Saturday, when Latvia holds its national parliamentary elections." read full story / add a comment

Up to 1,500 workers (Irish Times estimate) marched from Anglo-Irish Bank to the Dáil at lunchtime today. For a lunchtime event with very little publicity it was a surprisingly good turnout. The ICTU leaders had only planned for a stunt to get themselves on the TV news, their original idea was that a couple of hundred union officials and activists would provide a backdrop for David Begg or Jack O'Connor delivering a soundbite. read full story / add a comment
