Welcome to the Big Lie. Bertie Aherne is quoted in this morning's rag of unrecord (The Irish Independent Fri 12th Dec) as saying that the exclusion of Ireland from eligibility to bid for "Iraqi reconstruction contracts" is a sign that his "anti-war" policy has worked well. Yes, you heard him right: An Taoiseach is gloating over the fact that Irish companies are excluded. Let's do him a favour and assume that this is a cynical attempt to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear rather than genunine idiocy on his part. read full story / add a comment

Bush's policies have made our world a more a far more unstable and dangerous place. The so called 'war on terror' has meant death and destruction to ordinary people in Iraq and Afghanistan. It has increased the danger of more terrorist attacks taking place.

However, Bush is simply carrying through the wishes of US big business who gave generously to his campaign fund in 2000 when he was running for President. As well as opposing the war on terror and enviromental destruction that the Bush administration has brought, we need to oppose the capitalist system that he represents. Socialist Youth believes that this should be linked with the struggle for a socialist society where peoples needs come before profit. read full story / add a comment

The first attempt at blockading Shannon was marvellous testament to the willingness of the anti-war movement to engage in mass, non-violent, civil disobedience. The turn-out on the day was superb, not only because of the travelling involved, the time of the year and the energy-sapping nature of relentless anti-war activity, but also because of the risk of arrest. And the upbeat mood amongst participants suggests a willingness to return sooner rather than later. read full story / add a comment
