Despite a 150,000 petition collected by patients and their families and extensive lobbying including a facebook campaign, government TDs would not accept amendments from Labour and FG which would have protected St Luke's and retained it as a public cancer hospital.

Despite being on record as supporting the campaign to save St Luke's, John Gormley did not even appear at the Dail debate while constituency collegues Ruairi Quinn and Lucinda Creighton spoke up for St Luke's. Also absent was Chris Andrews FF. read full story / add a comment

In 1990, America’s President George H. W. Bush awarded William C. Rogers III, the Legion of Merit for his service as a commanding officer in the US navy. Two years previously Rogers had been the commander of the USS Vincennes when the warship shot down an Iranian civilian aircraft over the Persian Gulf killing all 290 people aboard . On the twenty-second anniversary of the atrocity last Saturday, relatives of the victims sailed to the spot where Iran Air A300 Airbus came down. In a message read out at the ceremony, Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad asked :
"In which culture ... can that Legion of Merit be awarded to the criminal USS Vincennes commander." read full story / add a comment

The Irish Climate camp will take place this year in County Tyrone, from the 12th to the 16th of August. The camp is taking place in support of the local community and their opposition to the proposed new A5. Climate Camp Ireland is a group of individuals that believe in taking direct action against the local causes of climate change. The Camp is open to anyone to attend, and will host numerous workshops on many aspects of climate change.

On Saturday July 3rd, Climate Campers took part in a rally organised by the Alternative A5 Alliance in the area surrounding Victoria Bridge, Co. Tyrone to mark their opposition to the planned building of a new dual carriageway. The rally was a silent and symbolic affair with a hearse carrying a coffin with flowers and wreaths. The coffin had a banner on it that read "Kill the road , not the environment". read full story / add a comment
