Democrats Eye Unfolding Ohio Coin Scandal

By JOHN SEEWER, Associated Press Writer

TOLEDO, Ohio - A disastrous investment by the state in rare coins has erupted into both a financial and political scandal, with Ohio's Republicans running for cover and the Democrats seeing great opportunity.

At least $10 million is feared missing from a $55 million fund that the Ohio Workers' Compensation Bureau set up in a risky and highly unorthodox foray into the buying and selling of coins. The investment was managed by coin dealer Tom Noe, a prodigious fundraiser who has showered contributions on Republicans in Ohio and beyond. read full story / add a comment

"Americans overwhelmingly see public broadcasting as an unbiased information source," Rep. David Obey (news, bio, voting record) (Wis.), the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee, said in a statement. "Perhaps that's what the GOP finds so offensive about it. Republican leaders are trying to bring every facet of the federal government under their control. . . . Now they are trying to put their ideological stamp on public broadcasting." read full story / add a comment

For the sake of those who have not read Village magazine this week (3-9 June), I am posting a copy of a letter I've had published, in which I point out that the old media, in their coverage of the appointment of George Bush and the invasion of Iraq, have committed all the crimes that the magazine's media analyst, Conor Brady, in last week's issue accused bloggers of committing. read full story / add a comment

Employees in the logistics industry all over Britain are being electronically tagged by their bosses in order to monitor and control their activities in the work-place. It's a new way in which productivity is increased and individual people are further reduced to being passive non-thinking cogs in a machine. According to statements made by some of the employers using these devices, we'll even learn to love these new chains.

I've never heard of these devices before so I can't say how prevalent their use is in Ireland. I'd be interested to see what action the GMB union will take given that they "will not stand by to see our members reduced to automatons.” If these tags aren't stopped across the water, it's likely that the same multinationals will also introduce them here in Ireland. read full story / add a comment
