THOUSANDS OF building workers downed tools and walked off sites throughout Germany to demand a 4.5% pay rise. The strikers are also demanding a rise in the minimum pay rate for workers in the former Eastern Germany. The strike called by the 900,000-strong IG Bau union is the country's first construction workers strike since 1945 and follows a series of labour strikes in recent weeks. As reported in The Socialist (Issues 254/255) the metalworkers' trade union, IG Metall, launched a rolling regional programme of strikes over pay. Eventually, a 22-month deal was agreed by the union's leadership which fell short of the union's official demand for a 6.5% pay rise. The strike is significant as it follows a massive 98% vote for action by union members and comes at a time of severe recession in the construction industry. The strike also comes just three months ahead of the general election, much read full story / add a comment

Last night, over 50 people met in a local hotel in Ballaghaderreen, to talk about the plans to build a massive “superdump” in the area. While the government hasn’t named it’s site yet –claiming it hasn’t chosen one, conveniently making the task of opposing it more difficult- it is known to be somewhere between Carracastle and Ballaghaderreen. read full story / add a comment

Behind the turbulent news from Israel, a struggle for historical truth has passed almost unnoticed outside academic circles; yet its wider significance is epic. In May 1948, more than 200 Palestinians were killed by the advancing Jewish militia in the coastal village of Tantura, south of Haifa. According to the recorded testimony of 40 witnesses, both Arab and Jewish, half the civilians were shot in a "rampage". The rest were marched to the beach, where the men were separated from the women and children. They were taken to a wall near the mosque where they were shot in the back of the head. read full story / add a comment

At a press conference the anti-leader of the workers anarchist righteous path of non authoritarian revolution federation proclaimed that the organisation was in favour of freedom of speech for all except Socialists of the Bolshevik Lenninist persuasion. This was because the Bolsheviks might want to shoot Anarchists, who after the revolution realise they are about to lose their inheritance and join the counter revolution. "This is an outrage" said the anti-leader. "Fascists we can tolerate being given free speech. They only want to kill jews, trade unionists, communists etc. but these Bolshevik Lenninists want to establish a workers state in which us Anarchists would not be able to prance around being oh so anti-establishment". Mr. anti-leader then went on to talk about Kronstadt for half an hour. read full story / add a comment
