A contingent of several hundred French activists took over the boulevard in front of the French embassy in Cairo, Egypt, demanding buses to go to the Rafah crossing to Gaza on Sunday, December 28, in the late evening. A group of French activists from the solidarity group EuroPalestine take over Mourad Street, the boulevard in front of the French Embassy in Cairo, next to the Four Seasons Hotel. They occupied the street with tents for 4 hours, stopping traffic, demanding buses to take them to the Gaza strip, forcing the French Ambassador to come and negotiate on their behalf. read full story / add a comment

Hedy Epstein, the 85 year old Holocaust survivor and peace activist, announced that she will begin a hunger strike today as a response to the Egyptian government’s refusal to allow the Gaza Freedom March participants into Gaza. Ms. Epstein was part of a delegation with participants from 43 countries that were to join Palestinians in a non-violent march from Northern Gaza towards the Erez border with Israel calling for the end of the illegal siege. Egypt is preventing the marchers from leaving Cairo, forcing them to search for alternative ways to make their voices heard. read full story / add a comment

Annual Seán Sabhat Commemoration The Annual Seán Sabhat Commemoration, organised by Limerick City Sinn Féin, will be held in Limerick on Sunday 3rd January 2010. The parade will assemble at Bedford Row at 2.45pm and, led by the Carrick-on-Suir Republican Flute Band, proceed from there to Sabhat’s grave in the Republican Plot, Mount St. Laurence Cemetery. The Limerick branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) will tomorrow, Sunday 27th Dec - the first anniversary of Israel's brutal attack on Gaza - commemorate the over 1,420 Palestinian fatalities of that tragic assault. At 11am on Patrick Stree, Limerick City, they will be erecting a 10ft 'Tree of Remembrance' with 88 branches and will be inviting members of the public to attach cards with the names of the victims to it. read full story / add a comment

The Galway Alliance Against War is throwing a New Year’s Day Peace Party in the Rowing Club in Woodquay Galway on January 1st starting at 7pm and admission is FREE. The Guest of Honour will be Malalai Joya, a female member of the Afghan parliament, who has survived 4 assassination attempts – she is hated by both the Karzai regime that banned her from parliament and the Taliban. Human Rights Watch described her as “the bravest woman in Afghanistan”. GAAW has arranged for a telephone link-up with Ms Joya from her base in the mountains of Afghanistan – Galway’s local peace group believes it will be a truly unique experience for people in Galway to hear first hand why the war in Afghanistan is not the solution to the problems of that troubled country. read full story / add a comment

Irish Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea admits making false and deflamatory statments against Limerick Sinn Fein Councillor Maurice Quinlivan. Minister O'Dea also admitted making false stements in evidence to the High Court in an earlier action, when he falsely denied having made these statements. Minister O'Dea has publically apologised to Mr Quinlivan, agreed to pay damages as well as paying all legal expenses. read full story / add a comment

With Minister John Gormley poised to ban stag hunting, the group known as Farmers Against Foxhunting and Trespass (FAFT) has just issued the following statement calling for the abolition of all hunting with hounds in Ireland on the grounds that it threatens their livelihoods (crops, property destroyed etc) and criticises the IFA for failing to come down on the side of farmers menaced by hunting. read full story / add a comment

Shannonwatch are concerned at the ongoing use of Shannon airport by companies and planes associated with the illegal US rendition program. Since March 2009, five aircraft that have been identified by Amnesty International, the EU Parliament or other sources have been recorded there. One of these planes, a Gulfstream IV with registration N478GS made news in early October when it was met by British military helicopters on a runway at Birmingham International Airport. Six days later it was at Shannon, thus reawakening the possibility that the airport is still facilitating illegal kidnapping and torture. read full story / add a comment

The truth is out! Those who revealed that the Israelis were harvesting the organs of palestinians were denounced as anti-Semites. But now Dr Jehuda Hiss, former head of Israel's Abu Kabir forensic institute has admitted its true. The Israeli military say they stopped doing this a decade ago. Who would believe them? Full text at link. Israel has admitted that in the 1990s, its forensic pathologists harvested organs from dead bodies, including Palestinians, without permission of their families. The issue emerged with publication of an interview with the then-head of Israel's Abu Kabir forensic institute, Dr Jehuda Hiss. The interview was conducted in 2000 by an American academic, who released it because of a huge controversy last summer over an allegation by a Swedish newspaper that Israel was killing Palestinians in order to harvest their organs. IRELAND PALESTINE SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN PRESS RELEASE, 20/12/09 Irish citizens travel to Middle East in Christmas bid to break Israeli blockade on Gaza Following several months of fundraising, four teams from across Ireland departed on Saturday, 5 December, to travel 4,000 miles across land to Gaza in Palestine to deliver ambulances and humanitarian aid to the besieged people of that tiny region. Concerned Irish citizens from Cork, Derry, Dublin, Galway and Tyrone are bringing two ambulances, a mini-bus, and a truck filled with over 10 tonnes of humanitarian aid. read full story / add a comment |
