This important conference provides activists of all hues with a chance to reflect on the sources of violence in our culture. It aims to combine contributions from exciting and innovative theorists with the lived experience of grassroots resisters. Periods of reflection and sharing of experience and theory are often underestimated as a source of strength and wisdom, particularly in anti-war activism. I would therefore urge anyone who feels they have something to say about resistance to mainstream cultural imperatives that ask us to tolerate violence to think about contributing to this conference. If you do not feel able to do so, please think about attending and participating more informally. The information is below. The Institute for Feminism and Religion is a not-for-profit organisation. Rooming in’ involves the care of a newborn infant in a cot near the mother’s bed instead of in a nursery during their hospital stay. This has very many positive advantages for the mother and baby in terms of bonding and getting to know the new baby’s routine in the early days of its life and also the instant availability of the mother for feeding, a recognised bonding time be it bottle or breast. Rooming in also has many advantages for maternity hospitals in terms reduction in requirements for nursery spaces in hospitals and therefore, reduction in numbers of staff required to supervise the nurseries and take care of the infants. Most Irish maternity hospitals operate a full rooming in policy but the question is - Do Irish Maternity Hospitals support rooming in? read full story / add a comment

This year, the Nineteenth Desmond Greaves School will consider the theme: ‘Labour and Republicanism – The Way Forward?’ It will be held in the ATGWU Hall at 55 Middle Abbey St, Dublin 1, from Friday, August 24th to Sunday, August 26th. The School will discuss republicanism as a political philosophy, the relationships and tensions between nationalism, republicanism, and socialism, and how republicanism and labour cna contribute to progressive change in today's Ireland. Against this background, the Republican Congress of the 1930s and the career of Peadar O'Donnell will be reassessed. An article appeared 2 years ago in the Galway Independent calling for people interested in a vegetarian lifestyle to meet up. Gathered at the subsequent meeting were a dozen people and the Galway Vegetarian Group was formed. The group has met on every first Thursday of the month since. Now they are to celebrate their 2nd birthday which is to take place on Wednesday August 8th 2007 at 8pm (8th of the 8th at 8pm) in the Cottage Bar, Lower Salthill, Galway and all interested are welcome to attend. read full story / add a comment

Labour in the West of Ireland appears to be in serious trouble. The latest high profile member to resign from the party is the sole Labour councillor on Galway County Council, Clr Colm Keavney. Taking into consideration the resignations in Leitrim, Sligo and Galway City in the recent past it looks like the Labour Party West of the Shannon is in meltdown. read full story / add a comment

In June this year the socialist unity magazine ‘Red Banner’ split, with the ‘Editorial board’ announcing that the magazine was ceasing publication and a new publication was planned, and an ‘Editorial collective’ announcing that publication will continue. read full story / add a comment
