The latest opinion polls continue to reveal a decline in support for Fianna Fáil, traditionally Ireland’s most successful political party. Disapproval of the coalition FF/Green Government’s performance is at 84%, a staggering indicator of dissent. Yet FF – the Soldiers of Destiny - retain support from some 20% of the electorate. The People Before Profit Alliance has today called on the eighteen religious orders identified by the Ryan Report as culpable of gross maltreatment of children to fully acknowledge their guilt and responsibility. A spokesperson for PBPA said, "We are profoundly shocked by the behaviour of the religious orders, who are now further compounding the abuse they perpetrated by their brazen refusal to re-open a deal which they negotiated in bad faith." read full story / add a comment

Alonzo Bodden arrived in Ireland this week for the Carlsberg Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival. He’s back here after playing to US troops at Camp Liberty in Iraq. As a former Stealth Bomber mechanic, Alonzo was no stranger to the military world when he signed up to bring a bit of laughter to the lives of troops on active service. The zany comic told Jay Richardson wittily in an interview published in today’s Irish Times.
