international / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Friday May 11, 2007 02:00 by Seán Ó Murchú
The 26-County Justice Bill, which was signed into law on May 9 marks yet a further erosion of civil rights in the 26-County state. Already the 26-County Administration has at its disposal a raft of some of the most draconian legislation in Western Europe, including the infamous Offences Against the State Act, as well as a non-jury Special Criminal Court.

The ceremonial opening of the power-sharing Executive at Stormont, with Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness sitting alongside Ian Paisley of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), is portrayed as a fairy tale ending to the Northern Ireland peace process. In fact, it is more akin to a business agreement between two hostile parties charged with opening up Northern Ireland PLC to global investors. read full story / add a comment

Esperanto and the libertarian movement

The purpose of this short article is, firstly, to inform readers of the benefits to be had learning the international language –Esperanto, secondly, to illustrate how the Esperanto movement, through the
efforts of its world body SAT (Sennacieca Asocio Tutmondo, or non-national world association of
Esperanto) is strongly committed to the fight for workers’ rights worldwide, and against the rise of
global capitalism, and finally to look ahead to the possibility of forming a Workers’ Esperantist Movement throughout Ireland. read full story / add a comment

The Inter-Faith Roundtable is a loose affiliation of people of different beliefs (from Christians, to Muslims, Hindus to Sikh etc) who seek to promote peace, tolerance, respect and understanding between the creeds and those of none. They will meet with Willie this Thursday 10th May at 12.00 outside St Nicholas’s Church and all are welcome to attend.

The Goldman prize is internationally renowned. It is the equivalent of a Nobel Prize for the environment. Willie was awarded the €93,000 prize in a ceremony in San Francisco two weeks ago. During his US trip he had the opportunity to put his case to leading US political figures. It was awarded in recognition of the Shell to Sea Campaign, which opposes the controversial ‘Corrib Gas’ project in Erris Co. Mayo.

100 years ago Belfast saw the first big battle between the working and employing classes in Ireland. The dockers' and carters' strike was the spark which lit a fire of working class militancy. Workers were flexing their muscle, Catholic and Protestant were uniting, 'Larkinism' was giving the bosses nightmares. Even the police got caught up in the new mood and mutinied. read full story / add a comment

The nurses’ work-to-rule and their threat to escalate the action has been met with an outraged onslaught by Mary Harney and Bertie Ahern. The sight of a group of workers standing up and demanding their rights has become so unusual that it seems as if the government cannot believe the temerity of the nurses in doing just that.

The segregated wings in Maghaberry are quickly filling up, and regrettably a significant body of criminals have entered these wings. The Republican Prisoners' Action Group is concerned that Republican POWs may be forced to double-up with other prisoners in their cells, and if the Brits or those acting on their behalf in Maghaberry attempt to force the POWs to share cells with criminals they may be forced into taking some form of action in protest against such a distasteful policy. read full story / add a comment

Tony Blair stated that today's events at Stormont should represent an end to a dispute between "two warring traditions", and was subsequently described by Bertie Ahern as "a true friend of Ireland. True Republicans were only ever at war with England, and whilst she continues to maintain her Occupation of this country further conflict is inevitable. Those who have sought to ensure the continuation of English rule in Ireland are only ensuring continuing warfare between these countries, and cannot plausibly be described as our friends. read full story / add a comment
