International Tax Justice Learning Day When? Monday 9th June 2008, 9.30 am - 5 pm. Where? Cassidy's Hotel, Cavendish Row, Upper O' Connell St, Dublin 1 Welcome along to a learning day on the issue of international tax justice. The purpose of the meeting is to increase participants' awareness of the importance of tax justice for global development, and the role that Ireland plays in the international tax system. The seminar will explore: - Key tax justice concepts and how they link with ongoing global justice work on debt, aid and trade. - The relevance of this debate to Ireland and Irish decision-makers and companies. - Action being taken for tax justice in other countries which global justice campaigners in Ireland might learn from. On May 21st special forces of the Austrian police forced entry to 23 homes of animal right activists across Austria. 14 persons were charged with suspected forming of a criminal organisation (§278a of the Austrian penal code) in connection with direct animal right actions. Ten persons were arrested and are in prison as suspects. At first nine were sent to the Vienna Neustadt prison and one to Innsbruck who has been brought to Vienna Neustadt on 28.05. Five prisoners are in hungerstrike at the moment, at least one since the 21.05. (date today: 29.05.). A new repersentive group is being formed to speak for the majority of Electrical Contractors in Ireland who have no voice when it comes to talks about pay and conditions. This group is to be called The NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS OF IRELAND (NECI). A meeting is being held in the Radisson Hotel Athlone on Saturday the 7th of June and all interested Electrical Contractors are invited to attend. Before Ruhollah Khomeini came to power, he portrayed himself and the proposed islamic regime as defenders of the poor: “This system of clerical rule is necessary to prevent injustice, corruption, oppression by the powerful over the poor and weak, and deviation from islam and sharia law; and also to destroy anti-islamic influence and conspiracies by non-muslim foreign powers.” Once in power and in a position to deal with Iran’s economy, Khomeini’s infamous response to demands for a better life spoke volumes about his real position: “People did not make revolution for bread. They made revolution for islam ... economy is for the donkeys” .He later expressed impatience with those who complained that the standard of living had dropped after the revolution: “I cannot believe that the purpose of all these sacrifices was to have less expensive food.” read full story / add a comment

The annual conference of the Public and Commercial Services union held on May 21-23 conference in Brighton overwhelmingly agreed to affiliate to Hands Off the People of Iran. The motion was proposed by Dave Vincent of the CPGB but its adoption was largely due to the supoort of Socialist Party activists in the union. éirígí Defends the Irish Right to Commemorate 1916 31/05/08 éirígí in mid-Ulster engaged recently in a number of commemorative events time scaled to coincide with the beginning of the Easter Rising and the execution of the last of its leaders. This provoked a carnival of reaction from unionist politicians and the RUC/PSNI in the mid-Ulster area, resulting in public condemnation of the commemorations by no less than five DUP representatives, and the theft and destruction of commemorative materials and flags by unknown entities throughout the period. read full story / add a comment |
