"Marriages are torn apart by the stress of coping with the abuses of government and the legal system, relationships with friends, relatives, children, and the ability to enjoy life can be twisted inside out." "They produce psychological depression, anxiety, substance abuse, sexual problems, obesity, and many other forms of disturbance that plague millions of people across the globe." "When you suffer in silence, when you allow the wrongs to stand without seeking redress and accountability, when you avoid demanding justice, you have become part of the problem. Proposed wording for 41.2.1 The State recognises caring work done within the home, often extending to the community, as a social and economic activity that produces social welfare and economic wealth, and entitles carers, starting with mothers, to economic and other support. The State also recognises that in rural areas caring work has included work on the land which has kept families and communities alive and strong despite poverty and emigration. Proposed wording 41.2.2 The State shall therefore ensure that carers, starting with mothers, are not obliged by economic necessity to engage in waged work which would increase their workload, and shall provide workers in the home with independent remuneration and pensions. read full story / add a comment

The recent cases of appalling treatment of families with intellectually disabled children at the hands of the Health Service Executive, North Eastern Division have thrown to the fore a concept which has been hitherto largely invisible – the power dynamics that underlie the field of disability. At first glance this may seem an unlikely area for hefty socio-political pondering but a little lateral thinking around the subject goes a long way and reveals much. read full story / add a comment

Following on from Labour Cllrs. McGarry and Cawley across the border in Sligo, Labour in Roscommon didn't what to be left out of the new populist policy towards minorities. Boyle Town Cllr. Willie Tiernan had interesting comments to say about a German couple, who have lived in the area for over 10 years, who lodged an Appeal to An Bord Pleanala about the building of a hotel, golf course and 297 holiday homes on Coillte land in Lough Key Forest Park. read full story / add a comment
