A call to join in the international days of solidarity against political repression in Russia Monday 12 November 2012

Today we, the representatives of Russian leftist organizations, turn to our comrades all over the world with an appeal for solidarity. This call and your response to it are very important to us. Right now we are facing not just another instance of dubious sentencing by the Russian “justice” system or another case of a human life broken by the encounter with the state’s repressive apparatus. Today the authorities have launched against us a repressive campaign without precedent in the recent history of Russia, a campaign whose goal it is to extinguish the left as an organized political force. The recent arrests, threats, beatings, aggressive media attacks and moves towards declaring leftist groups illegal all point to the new general strategy on the part of the authorities, much more cruel and much less predictable than that of recent years. read full story / add a comment

The current economic model, based on the massive use of energy, is pushing more intensive forms of extractive activities which often have detrimental impacts on communities and the environment. This reality has lead to many cases of open conflict between local communities and multinational interests –with national governments sometimes opting for aiding economic interests with the use of public force against local communities in resistance. Speakers from Colombia and Ireland will address this tension and how communities organize to resist an unsustainable model.

So called Syrian "freedom fighters" claiming to be rebelling against atrocities committed by the Assad government are seen here massacring wounded men on the ground. If that's not an atrocity, what is?
RTE have been reporting in a very one sided manner on Syria, painting these "rebels" in a good light while putting the boot into the Assad "regime" at every opportunity. Our Taniste went on a one sided tirade against the leadership in Syria for 15 minutes of the prime time program recently before going to the UN to urge them to create a no fly zone in Syria. These murdering thugs in this video are the people they are protecting. Tanaiste, RTE, you have blood on your hands! read full story / add a comment

People who have asked me about Neo-Luddism often assume that I am completely anti technology, but that is not the case. Like the original Luddites, I am opposed to the use of technology to dis-empower and impoverish people and I am also opposed to the abuse of technology simply to make profit or to kill (sometimes it’s both). read full story / add a comment

Human Rights Watch has compiled an extensive report on the martyrdom of Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi. It describes a battle with Colonel Al Gaddafi, General Abu Bakr Younis, and Libyan soldiers against the NATO rats that the USA had called in to finish the job they had attempted from the skies. Al Gaddafi was armed with an assault rifle, plus the noble gold plated pistol, that the rats later displayed as a trophy. read full story / add a comment

Well it is a daunting task for a simple punter like me to attempt to write about Wednesday night's performance in The National Concert Hall by the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig; directed by Riccardo Chailly, Gewandhauskappellmeister; with Lynn Harrell, cello. The concert opened with Shostakovich, Cello Concerto No. 2 in G, Opus 126. Rachmaninov Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Opus 27, was given after the interval. For me it was a once-in-a-lifetime event, the best orchestral concert I ever attended. read full story / add a comment
